"Follow Me"___20 x 24 and "Follow Me - study" below____all sold
On June 5-7 I will teach a 3 day workshop at the Fredericksburg Artists School (TX). It is called: "Painting Fast Every Day (...and What to do With All Those Studies)"...Here is an exapmple of that....sort of. This top painting is a big one derived from the small one below. Starting Monday. I will show a few like this, and share a few things about "how to".
I just figured out that there are people "FOLLOWING ME", on my BLOG, though I had not set up the "follow me widget" yet...It took me way too long, but I finally figured out how to do it! There, on the right side of this BLOG is a little thing to click, that will allow you to Follow...I am still not sure what it means, but it makes the blog look new...so, in honor of the widget, I am posting this painting called "Follow Me"....

A Museum Show
A Glow Study_____collection of M.M.__on display at the show below:
" Voices of American Farm Women"
Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art
Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art
February 4, 2009 - April 30, 2009
I wanted to let you know briefly about the Voices of American Farm Women exhibition, made available by Exhibits USA, at the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art, in Nebraska.
The exhibition consists of 30 black and white photographs of working farm women by photographer Cynthia Vagnetti. This exhibition in most relevant to the museum’s focus and has great implications on the local community. During the reception there was a discussion panel of 3 farm women from the local area to remark on their reactions to the exhibition and their daily lives as farm women. The other neat thing that came with this exhibition is the emphasis on the environment. There are several panels of text and books that discuss sustainable farming practices and other agriculturally minded subjects that inform about current farming techniques. So in conjunction with this exhibition, in the front gallery they rearranged the permanent collection space full of artwork about farm women in subject and/or by farm women. I am included in this space!, with “Glow Study” a painting purchased by the museum curator. This is an exciting and informative exhibition because it combines art with a daily lifestyle and livelihood of a large part of this country, the agricultural community

Praise and Glory_a couple of tee shirts
Here's what you post when the painting goes bad! I always have tee shirt designing to fall back on if this oil painting gig doesn't work out! HAHA!!! Seriously, I had just set up with the group Plein Air Austin, out at the lake on a PERFECT day to paint, with Qiang on one side, Sue Kemp , and Laurel Daniel on the other (so I had good artists to COPY from if I needed to :), when my phone rang and I got called to an unexpected IMPORTANT meeting...(THANK YOU ROBIN!)...so I wiped the painting off and have decided to post these two tee shirt designs which I did for the choir teacher at the school I taught at for 19 years...As soon as these are printed, I will wear them to the paintouts!!! GLORY!!!
HEY! I STILL teach a lot, y'all, and welcome artists of all abilities. Rookie artists NEVER hold back my groups, because we all work on our OWN paintings! Sometimes learning comes from each other. My workshops are NEVER intimidating, nor are they a piece of cake...I work you HARD and EXPECT improvement, because YOU WILL improve! I am finally comfortable saying that, because it's true, and we have an AMAZING FUN TIME....like art should be!!!
Praise and Glory be to creativity!!!
Here are some upcoming workshop dates:

On the Corner__8 x 6
"On the Corner"___8 x 6 oil on linen panel___a workshop demo for $100
On Saturday I was in Calvert, TX, working with 7 artists all day.
This was a really good group, with a lot of art skill. Earlier in the week I posted the sunrise and sunset demos. We also did a Chicken Clinic (with REALLY NICE CHICKENS that spent the day in the storefront window at Mud Creek Pottery...thank you, Sonny!).
Late in the afternoon I was explaining something about the value of color and there, out the window, was this little scene. The shadow side of the yellow awning is the same value as its purple cast shadow on the wall. It was easier to "show" than to "tell" so that all would understand...The painting is not a super composition, but the lesson was well understood! (If I were to make a larger work from this, I might put a sign on the wall which falls half in light, half in shadow....what do you think?
Check out my workshop schedule and new front page at my web site, v-vaughan.com

"Sunset in Calvert"___6x8___$150 if you want it first!
Saturday was a workshop day in Calvert, Texas. Yesterday I posted the sunrise....we worked all day till Sunset, and here is what it looked like. Barbara coordinated the plein air locations, and this was a good one, along a country road. There was a wide space in the road, perfect for painters' set-ups...but this turned out to be a demo...I painted while the rest of the group did some "unwinding" from a long day. I hope I didn't wear y'all out! I try to pack as much as I can into a long workshop day, and this group seemed to soak it all in so well! Especially the paintings on the street in downtown Calvert....I will post one of those tomorrow!
Come take a workshop with me if you can. After teaching young people for 19 years, I think I excell at identifying your strengths...unique things about YOUR ART that you might not see....and I add to your strengths to take you to the next level....I promise improvement and good times!
Here's where I will be, and WHEN!

Touch of Spring
"Touch of Spring_Calvert Sunrise"__8x10___$150 if you as first!
Saturday's sunrise was spent in Calvert, TX, where I just taught my second wokshop there.
This day had everything: A fairly warm morning, with little buds on the trees showing a touch of spring...then a hard rainstorm, just as we went inside, a driving wind as a cold front passed and a bright, cold sunset....the lesson of this sunrise demo was about painting BRIGHT light with a limited palette (only ultramarine, alizarin, cad yellow and a little cad red...plus white were used on this one....the secret?...START with the brightest, lightest light (rather than the darkest darks)...And be ready to learn from what you see! Remember the green grass lesson, y'all? Come to one of my workshops if you can...or send your favorite artist! We have a lot of fun!...see schedule below:

Quick Draw Poppy at SEWE
"SEWE Poppy Quick Draw"___12 x 12 oil sold at auction at SEWE in Charleston, SC
Thank you to Linda L., who sent me this photo of the poppy I painted at the "Quick Draw" at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition last Friday in Charleston, SC. Quick Draw artists have 45 minutes to paint and then frame an original piece of art. I enjoyed a fun crowd who watched...one nice fan ran across the room for me to borrow some turp (thank you to artist Dustin Van Welchel, who generously gave me a few drops for my tank!)
Gee...I think my recent posts must be VERY encouraging to you artist-types out there....good for your self-esteem, as I have recounted my travails of forgetting my brushes at a demo, losing the inner part of my turp can in an alligator swamp and now having to borrow supplies from another artist! See??? It's an "artist-thing, y'all".
Here are a few workshops I will teach this year....come to one if you can!:

Late in the Low Country
"Late in the Low Country"____8x10____$150 if you are the first to ask!
Imagine a beautiful low country wetland in South Carolina. Here is a typical scene where I have been painting this week! Now, imagine standing on a narrow causeway, with this blackwater ahead and water behind, and alligator slides up and down the causeway. I was painting there when the wind came up and tipped my easel set-up, knocking my turp tank off. It rolled down one of the big slides and into the black water, with my friend, artist Melanie Fain close behind. She saw where it went in, so I stuck my arm into that water to get part of it out. I came halfway to my senses and switched to my non-painting LEFT arm, sinking it as deep as I could into the water, feeling for the inner part of the turp can. No luck, but I got a good case of the "creeps" and the rest of my senses came back. Another artist friend, Joe Garcia swooshed the water around for awhile, but he couldn't find it, either. ...I am sad because this was my first turp can, and I get attached to such things!....
Glad to be home with both arms, though!!!
Below is a good bit of info about a BIG WORKSHOP I'll have in April. See if you'd like to come.
This one will be COMPREHENSIVE....full of goodies....hope you will consider it!

V....Vaughan at the Iron Horse Inn, Granbury, TX. April 6-9 (4 days), 2009
This span of days will give us SPECTACULAR sunrises, sunsets and moonrises. We WILL work at the extreme ends of the day for some sessions. This will be a COMPLETE painting workshop, and will include many exercises to give you NOTICEABLE improvement in your drawing, color mixing, brushwork and speed.
The site itself is FULL of variety for painting from life. If you have never painted en plein air this will be a great place to start. If you are experienced, I'd love to get my "hands on" you to help take you to the next level. You WILL leave there a better painter.
Here is info Theresa sent me about the Iron Horse Inn, itself...
The Iron Horse Inn is a beautiful historic mansion , with much of its original furniture and antiques. It has a fascinating history, and all of our guests are given the historic tour. The house is over 6,500 sq. ft and all of the unique bedrooms have private bathrooms. Guests have full usegbof the 2 living rooms, dining room and large front porch.
The house is set on over an acre of gardens with 400 year old live oaks and a fish pond and waterfall. at night all of the trees are lit with mercury vapor lights which look like dappled moonlight!
Breakfasts and lunches are served in the large dining room on the historic 1885 mission oak dining table. The Iron Horse is known for its delicious breakfasts!
The studio is a brand new, 2 story building in the garden with bright and airy space, and is available 24 hours for all workshop participants who just don't want to stop painting.
We are right beside the hike and bike track with over 2 miles of lovely walks to explore. The trail takes you to the historic center of Granbury which is a quaint town with its original storefronts and court house. There are many lovely gift shops, antique shops, restaurants and galleries and there is even live theater on the weekends. Granbury is also situated on a large lake and there are many pret ty parts of the lake to explore, including a beach and a boardwalk.
Of course the main reason folks will want to come is to have the pleasure of doing a V...Vaughan workshop for 4 whole days! And the prices are pretty great too. For as little as $550 up to 5 participants can share our Garden Gate Cottage, have breakfast and lunch for 4 days, take 4 days tuition with V..Vaughan and have 24 hour access to the purpose built studio. This is one of the most reasonable artistic retreats around.
I hope that this may wet some appetites! It will be a really lovely experience for everyone.

"Bounty in Charleston"____10 x 8 oil on linen....painted with a paper towel!
A few weeks ago I painted a similar image en plein air at a workshop. The image was still on my mind, so I planned to do a demo of it in Charleston while there last week. When I got to the demo location, I did not have my brushes!!!!*#!*## But, the demo must go on! I rolled up a paper towel and painted this one from memory. The title was given to me by fellow artist Adele Earnshaw, and makes reference to her favorite brand. I might have named it Viva!
I'll teach a one-day workshop Saturday in Calvert. Come if you can! Details below...

Eye Lesson
"Eye Lesson"___an upsidedown-impromptu lesson in Charleston _click to enlarge
I got a quick fix with some young art students this afternoon, as a group of Middle School kids came by my exhibit at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, SC. I LOVE to teach and when these kids came by, I couldn't help myself. One young man asked how I do eyes...I did this one , facing the kids, drawing the eye upsidedown so they could see it better....When I looked up, the group had grown to about 20 people....REMEMBER, KIDS...it all started with a BIG circle, NOT "football shape" :)
Join me at a workshop this year...if you remind me, I'll give this quickie eye demo___

Tigers
TIGERS__a mascot design...sort of like wildlife
So here I am in Charleston, SC. After a bad weather adventure in Dallas last night, I finally got here a day late. The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition begins tomorrow with the big patron party! (The patrons are normal size, but the party is big!)...I hope to see many old friends there!
Sorry for the cartoon wildlife, y'all...technical problems are preventing me from shooting the oil paintings and drawings. I could post these things for weeks, but will direct you to RockSports to see the rest. I think I have a solution for tomorrow....If not, I think I'll post the FROGS mascot...one of my favorites :)
Come to a workshop if you can this year....the next one is Saturday, Oct 21 in Calvert, TX.

Zebra Letters
"Zebra Letters" ___a school Mascot design__See More Mascots at RockSports.net
As I prepare to go to Charleston tomorrow for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, I let the day get away from me and did not photograph the wet paintings I have...Now I have to pack them...so...here's some "wildlife" I did last week...If you can picture a shadow outline around these shapes you will be able to read the word "ZEBRAS". Click the art to see details.
I don't talk about it much on my BLOG, but a BIG PART of my career has been humorous art...cartoons and tee shirt designs. I still do them for RockSports, a company I helped get rolling about 17 years ago. This is a brand new school mascot design for tee shirts. I have about 80 mascots. See if you can think of just 30, then go see all the crazy mascots that are out there these days: Miners, Frogs, Prairie Dogs.......some are not so politically correct....
Of course I am a "serious painter" now, so please do not tell anyone about all this silliness....but I can't help myself! go see more! and more!
...and if you come to a workshop (see below) and mention these, I will be happy to talk about it! Just don't tell the galeries and art show judges!!!

"Wind Across the Marina"___8 x 10 oil___$150
This view is across the parking lot at the Rockport (TX) Center for the Arts, just out the back door! There is not a BETTER place to paint, anywhere. I will be teaching a few more Saturday workshops there this year. Even though it was very windy, Saturday, we were still able to paint outside. My study, here, was an attempt to create the image of wind.
My 2009 Workshop dates are below. E-mail if you would like more info. vvaughan8@yahoo.com

Played Out___9x12
"Played Out"____9x12______available at the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition
This one goes with me to Charleston, SC next week. Actually, it has been shipped and will beat me there! A retriever is NEVER without a ball, preferably a tennis ball. If you are in Charleston from Feb. 11 - 15, come see me at the Charleston Place Hotel, downtown. I will be painting in the "Quick Draw" on Saturday : 45 minutes to create and original oil from scratch, 15 minutes to frame it, then we auction the art for the benefit of SEWE. I have a great time at the Quick Draws, and I suppose , for the crowds watching, it's WAY MORE exciting than watching paint dry!
THIS SATURDAY, I teach a one day workshop in Rockport, TX...can you come??? If not, try to make it to one of my other classes. For more info vvaughan8@yahoo.com. See below:

Romeo at Jake's Place_24 x 30
"Romeo at Jake's Place"___24 x 30__a BIG one for Southeastern Wildlife Exposition
This painting is one of my big ones for the show...my model : Romeo. I sketched him a lot in preparation for this, but I used "Jake's Place" for his surroundings. (THANK YOU, Till!) Romeo laid on my studio couch all week while I painted him, but never looked at the painting! What's the deal with dogs? They don't seem to see in 2-D!
I will be in South Carolina from Feb 10 - 19...Feb 11-15 is the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston, then, afterwards I will get to paint at the Donnelly Wildlife Refuge (ACE Basin), with other artist friends. This place is WILD...full of alligators and whooping cranes and other waterfowl....I can't wait!
I will be in Rockport Saturday for a one-day workshop...heavy on drawing, I will shapes, rather than lines...come for my secrets if you can, or try another one later...please ask if you are interested! vvaughan8@yahoo.com

Workshop Lesson_Guadalupe Mountains
Workshop Lesson_Guadalupe Mountains___8x10___$190 (click image to see the juicy details)
Hi Teachers! Here is what it looked like at the end of the lesson. A few of the teacher/students had to leave early to get , and I told y'all I would post it today.
The lesson was about the value of color (a double meaning) and we pre-mixed all the colors of the big shapes in this composition.
Please think about coming to a workshop this year. I have one-day, 3 day and 4 day workshops, and cram all I know into the lessons. We have way too much fun, and I PROMISE you will leave a better painter. See my WORKSHOP SCHEDULE for details and contact info. A summary of dates and places is below:
