Light over the Stable

"Last Year on the Farm, Christmas Day, 2006: Light Over the Stable"...all 365 "Last Year..." Paintings are on display at the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln, NE from Jan 2 - Mar 14. Please stop by!
Last Year I painted this early in the morning, while the toll road lights were sitill on.
When I finished it I noticed that the bright light was positioned over the little barn where the cows huddle from the cold. This was a perfect Christmas painting of "lowing cattle", and the "star" pointing the way to the miracle birth of Our Lord and Savior's birth.
May this Christmas Season be your most memorable, as you, too, seek the Reason for the Season....
Merry CHRISTmas!
I will be back on the 26th with some exciting news!

Rockport Bait Docks

"Rockport Bait Docks"....9 x 12...Merry Christmas Special $150 includes shipping

This one really isn't in my way , but I have a few like it and am still making room in my smaller studio.
Can't get it to you before Christmas, but will ship it asap.
Merry Christmas!
I have some special things to announce next week, after Christmas, so please stay tuned and look for some new things from the Farm.
See you in Lincoln on January 4th for the opening reception of my first Museum Show at the Great Plains Art Museum!

Red Rock Crossing

"Red Rock Crossing"....6x8 oil on linen....$100 if you are first to ask!
This one was a demo that I did at the workshop I taught in Arizona last summer. It was done with a palette knife and is really juicy! I am still clearing out my studio, getting ready to begin some BIG ONES of the farm to take to some shows. My smaller studio will be a challenge to work in, but I am ready to start rolling on some big ones, after painting "Last Year on the farm". If you are new to my blog, please see all 365 small works at my web site.
I just delivered all the farm paintings to the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln, NE. They are hanging it as we speak, getting ready for the opening night on Jan. 4. If you are ANY WHERE near Lincoln that night PLEASE come say hello and let me show you my favorites from the farm.
I hope you will "tune in" next week, because I have a special announcement to make after Christmas.
ill then, tell your friends to watch here for some studio bargains....

I painted this one as a TV demo in California in October.
It's nice and juicy, and taking up space in my studio, so I am putting it into my "Studio Sale". I am glad that many of you have responded and are helping me find good homes for these little gems...clearing the way for new works in 2008.

In the Shepherd's hand

"In the Shepherd's Hand"....print of pencil drawing, 18 x 24...framed $150, includes shipping
This drawing was presented to pastors in the Austin area a few years ago for Pastor's Appreciation month. It was commissioned by our local Christian Radio station and I got to present it at their banquet and explain the symbolism.
I had just read a series of books by W. Phillip Keller, called "A Shepherd Looks at the 23rd Psalm". Then I read the follow-up books "A Layman Looks at the Lamb of God", and "Lessons from a Sheep Dog" . These books are full of word pictures which I tried to convey in this art. It depicts the role of the Pastor in the Shepherd's hand...yes, in this drawing, the pastor is the dog, and the Great Shepherd is the one in charge...with patience and a strong loving hand....there's more...This print is the last one that I have framed. I have a few unframed ones somewhere :)
Letme know if you'd like it, and I'll tell you the rest of the story...better yet...get the books!!!

Morro Coffee

"Morro Coffee"...6 x 8 oil on linen...$100 to the first to ask! Add $15 to overnight it to you!
It looked like a cool old diner, so we decided to paint it! This little place in Morro Bay, CA actually housed a great coffee bean grinder and the folks here make bags of coffee which they wholesale. I think they are wasting a great "storefront" by not having a retail shop. While we were painting there, a half dozen or more people stopped by to see what the building was and if they could go inside.
As I continue my "Studio Sale", I have found wonderful homes for many of these paintings that need them! Lotsof my friends have purchased these special bargains. I say a BIG THANK YOU and Merry CHristmas!

Wet Water

Rockport Reflection"....6x8...oil on Linen Panel....$150 to the first to ask!
Merry Christmas! Free shipping on this one. It's a demo I did at my November workshop in Rockport. I wanted to show how its COLOR that gicves the impression of "wet". It was a drizzly afternoon and the dock was wet, the sky was wet and the w ter was wet!
I will give a series of one day workshops in Rockport, TX next year. Each one will build on the last oone and my goal is to SEE improvement in my students each time, and to equip YOU to grow as a painter!
The first class is January 19. We will have a long and SERIOUS day of DRAWING....using some pencil but mostly, preparing the drawing before you paint and using a brush. I like to say that pencil drawing uses LINE, brush drawing uses SHAPES....we will explore perspective, scale and proportion. I hold nothing back and give all my "secrets"...Before becoming an impressionist, I was a photorealist, able to draw with precision. My strength is drawing and I LOVE to pass on all the great shortcuts I know.
PLEASE plan to come to the January workshop! Contact the Rockport Center for the Arts for more info.

Armadillo World HQ Pitcher

"Remember the Armadillo"...Official "World Souvenir" of Austin's Famous Armadillo World Headquarters...
My Art Studio Sale continues in a strange way...Yes, I the teatotaller have an official beer pitcher from the famous Armadillo World Headquarters. Here's how it happened:

Back in the early 1980's, I did a lot of freelance promotional graphics for our big radio station in Austin, K98. When The Armadillo closed, they somehow acquired all the leftover beer pitchers, so they had me paint the official logo on there with a comemorative "official " limited edition graphic. There were only 62 pitchers and all were given away in a radio promo or maybe to their special advertisers.

They gave me this one which is numbered 61 of 62.

The first picture shows the front logo and words saying "Armadillo World Headquarters World Souvenir. Complements of K98"

The second photo shows the Budweiser logo with a handpainted puddle of beer and a little armadillo drinking from it. It is signed V.V.

This must be old, because I did not yet use my four dots in V....Vaughan !

It will be fun to see what happens to this thing! My son thought an EBAY auction would be fun, so here is the link to the auction! It would make a great gift for a fan of Austin music...or an old hippie!

Colored Pencil Sports Framed

Framed Colored Pencil Sports Art......originals, average size 18 x 22 BIG!...$100 each
All four for $350
These go way back to my tee shirt days. Prismacolored Pencil drawings on Canson paper or acid free matt board. They are colorfully framed and would look good in a young athlete's room. These are ORIGINAL works of art and when I die they will be worth a TON!
Trivia:
-I used a photo of myself for the soccer player girls..the girl in blue.
-Former University of Texas Basketball player, Lance Blanks was my model for the basketball guys. I did a job for him while he was still playing and he brought me to some games to take photographs. He was recently inducted into the University's Hall of Frame.
-I think my favorite one is the tennis player, though. It is no one famous, but is a little stylized and I like that.
EMAIL ME if you want any or all of these! There will be a small shipping charge.

Mountain Ranch

"Mountain Ranch"...12x6 oil on linen panel...$100 includes shipping
Here is one I did at the McGregor Ranch in Estes Park, CO a few years ago. The scale of the mountains there is amazing, against the small aspen trees by the little stream! I paint in CO a lot and always have a few laying around, so this one I am offering during my "Studio Sale"...MERRY CHRISTMAS to the first one who wants it!!
A reminder ....Next week my 365 "Last Year on the Farm" paintings are headed up to Nebraska's Great Plains Art Museum for a 2 month show. If you have purchased one, there will be a sticker on the tag, indicating your painting is unavailable. You can purchase the paintings from me at any time, now! Please see them at www.v-vaughan.com under the "Last Year..." link. E-mail me if there is one that you'd like. Pretty soon I will have my field notes for each painting up on the web site. Merry CHRISTmas!

Colorful Austin

"Colorful Austin"....appx 17 x 22 framed print....$75 framed, $20 unframed, 12 x 16 , includes shipping!

If you remember back that far, Austin used to be pretty cool! And, the tallest buildings here were the Capitol and the UT tower. That tells you what we thought was most important, back then!

This art was a commercial project done years ago. Most of the BEST Austin icons are here: The hills, 360 bridge, moonlight towers, lakes, sometimes islands, sixth street....nothing is labled, so you have to have a clue about Austin to see it all with appreciation. Otherwise...it's colorful!!! My favorite icon here is our farm house up at the top right, with the cows coming home!

I have a few dozen of these prints, but only one framed one. It's a fun one! Take your pick!!
One framed one at $75 Unframed $20 Includes shipping.

MArtin Ranch Longhorn

"Martin Ranch Longhorn"....8 x 10 oil on linen panel...framed...$220 includes shipping
Well, it will be a long time before I have a show in Texas, and this one is in my way (with the rest of the Studio Sale items) this month!
EVERYONE in Texas likes longhorns...even the Aggies, as long as there is no pigskin around it!
I'll ship this to the first one who wants it!
Here is an offer to anyone traveling nearby or living in the Austin area....All these "Studio Specials" are set aside, and if you want to come by to take your pick before I blog them, I will make you a SPECIAL deal, so that I don't have to ship them....I might have you name your price, to take it off my hands. E-mail me at vvaughan8@yahoo.com
RIGHT NOW, I am preparing the 365 paintings of the "Last Year on the Farm", to travel to Nebraska's Great Plains Art Museum NEXT WEEK. After this Studio Sale round of art, I will start showing the latest farm paintings, including those frommy LAST DAY on the Farm....Merry Christmas!

"Distance"

"Distance"....appx. 12 x 14...an old, original, hand-pulled drypoint print....UNFRAMED $50, includes shipping
Inspired by "Chariots of Fire", I did this a number of years ago. The drawing is a drypoint, done on a zinc plate, then the plate is inked and rubbed and pulled through a printing press. The printmaking process is very involved...so I am a painter now! Clearing my studio! This is a good deal, but I will take it out of this frame to ship to you (see the broken glass?...this is why I am an oil painter!

Bait Bucket

"Bait Bucket"......oil on linen panel....9x12.....$180
I am heading off to Rockport for a workshop day tomorrow...the weather is predicted to be AWESOME, so come if you can. It's not too late!
Here is a little (not too little!) gulf coast painting I did as a demo while teaching in Shreveport a couple months ago. I really wanted to hold this for my Charleston show, but wanted to show something from the coast to let everyone know I am teaching
TOMORROW in Rockport. I have it "bargain priced" to stay consistant with this month's Studio Sale"
In 2008 I will be teaching there each month and working to develop plein air artists in their outdoor experience! We are starting Jan 19 with a focus on DRAWING Outside. We will not necessarily use just pencils!
Please click the link for more info, or contact me!

Bluebonnets and Primrose

"Bluebonnet and Primrose Meadow"....appx. 21 x 26 ...ORIGINAL watercolor FRAMED...$300 including shipping if you are first to ask! This is a nice big painting at a "STEAL" of a price ;)

This looks a LOT like yesterday's painting, but it's Primroses instead of Paintbrush with the great Texas Bluebonnets. Here is the same info from yesterday...
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is my favorite attraction in Austin. Since their earliest days, 25 years ago, I have been active there, showing art and supporting their events.I frequently paint there, (these days in oils). But I got my start at The Wildflower Center painting wildflowers in great detailed watercolors. I even have a personal letter from Mrs. Lady Bird Johnson, complementing me on my primrose painting (I will BLOG that painting in a few days). It is a cherished memento, along with photos of her with me and my children. She was a VERY nice, warm and gracious lady who I was pleased to meet a number of times. The painting above is one of these fine originals that needs a good home as I make room in my new studio.

Edgewater

"Edgewater"
8x6 oil on
linen panel
......$100 to
YOU if you
ask first

It will be a long time before they see green like this in Colorado where this one was painted last summer. I was with DM, TS and JS and we each painted a different view of this beautiful area, and we met the owners of the Edgewater Cabins resort near Winter Park and Lake Granby.
I'm still making room in my studio, so stay tuned this month. Next week I will clear out a few big watercolor wildflower paintings WITH THE FRAMES!! These are FAMOUS paintings, too. I'll explain later...

Fallbrook Knob

"Fallbrook Knob"......6x8 oil on linen panel......First one with $100 gets it!

I painted this in Fallbrook, CA a few months ago. Since then, there have been horrible fires there, and some of the lovely places I went are burned down completely. I wonder what this knob looks like now? This little painting is a dramatic sky vs landscape...my "studio sale" continues...

Outgoings of the Morning, and detail

"Outgoings of the Morning"...24 x 30 HUGE oil on linen....reg $3500 unframed...TODAY $900
This one has a frame on it that I REALLY need for something else, so I am sort of "giving" the art away to the first one who needs a BIG painting. See price... and see detail below...
The Conejos River valley in Southwestern Colorado is our summer stomping ground and this is what it looks like that time of year. The elk come down to the river, but as soon as the morning leaves, so do they. The title of this comes from a place in the Psalms referring to God's majesty..."...You make the outgoings of the morning and the evening rejoice."...I forget which psalm, but can look it up if you want to know.
I will take this to my gallery in Colorado next month, if I do not hear from anyone, but I'd like to offer it first to "my gang", since I am clearing things out this month!...

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

DETAIL from "Outgoings of the Morning"....see info above

White on the Rocks

"White on the Rocks"....8 x 6 oil on linen panel...$75 to the first to ask!
The best part about this little bird was his YELLOW FEET, and how his bright white feathers contrasted the deep blue surf....a painting from my Rockport travels. Next workshop day is Dec. 8. We'll paint the PEOPLE working the oyster catch...beautiful rugged fishermen! Please EMAIL me if you'd like to join us. vvaughan8@yahoo.com

Guadalupe In Kerrville

"Guadalupe in Kerrville"........9x12 oil on linen panel............$100 to the first who asks!
I am haviong fun finding good homes for the MANY plein air small canvases I have accumulated! My studio at the farm was nice and spacious and I could keep lots of things around, but this new studio is smaller, so I am making room by finding a place for some overlooked gems....for a small adoption fee you can claim the one above!...Merry CHRISTmas!

San Jose Mission

"San Jose Mission"...........6 x 8 oil on linen panel............$100
Happy Thanksgiving weekend!
After I painted this, a big group came out of the mission, which still has a Mariachi Mass on Sundays...They played guitars and sang (loud) : "Ay, ay, ay, ay, canta y no llores. Porque cantandan se alegran cielito lindo los corazones...." (correction of my Spanish is welcomed! I speak it, but don't speel too well) :)
...and I vowed to do more paintings of this JOY from the photos I took.

Buscando Kid

"Buscando Kid".....oil on linen panel....8 x 10.....$150 to the first who wants it

My "studio sale" continues...I am not selling "studies" or practice paintings...these are my "usual" works, but ones that I have had for a year or more. I paint a LOT, and really don't like having too much laying around! So, Happy Holidays! Have a nice piece of art for a GREAT price and help me fit into this smaller studio! I won't do this for long....just till Christmas ;)

Next workshop is in Rockport, (where "Buscando Kid" was painted..."Buscando,", by the way, means "searching"). The workshop is on Sat. Dec. 8 . We will start early as usual at Cove Harbor, then we'll paint at the docks by Charlotte Plummers, trying for people this time. They are unloading lots of oysters these days and there are wonderful asian people wearing those cool hats and working with the catch....Bring cameras and sketch books! Let me know if you want to carpool from Austin!

Norton Greens

"Norton Ears"....12x12....oil on linen panel......$150
A couple months ago I taught a workshop in Shreveport, LA. There is an amazing art museum there called the Norton gallery. This is a MUST SEE if you like American msterpieces: Bierstadt, Moran, Remington, Russel...HUGE rooms full of these great artists.
The museum has wonderfully landscaped grounds, too, so I took the class there to paint. This one above was a demo I did. It's a nice study of the "greens" in a water garden. Another one priced to "Make-room in-the-studio".
Happy Thanksgiving, Y'all!!

Rusty Giclee

"Rusty"......9 x 12....giclee on canvas...only a few left....$50 each
More from the big (small!) studio sale...I do not often make reproductions of my work, but when I do, the edition size is VERY small. Because I PAINT A LOT, I ALWAYS have new works, and the "old" ones tend to annoy me if they are here too long. One sure way to get annoyed is to have a BIG edition! So I am down to just a couple of these nice canvas giclees. Let me know if you want one!

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Lady Birds

"Lady Birds"...........14 x 11 oil on linen................$150
Another special price as the studio cleaning continues!...
I post this today, mainly for the title...Our beloved dog "Lady Bird" died in her sleep at the new house yesterday. Many of you met miss Lady Bird at the Farm Reception in October. She was the last of MANY stray dogs we adopted over the years, and was the one dog EVERYONE liked. We think she had a hard life before coming to us. Lady Bird had only been at the new place for a couple of days. I will paint her soon :(
But I painted the above bluebonnets and mocking birds at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center a couple years ago. Thus, the title....

The painting above is still available(I think) at one of my galleries. If you are interested in the original, please let me know and I will track it down. It would cost $ more...the giclees shown above are FINE reproductions on canvas, ready to frame. Only 2 are left in this edition.
Happy Thanksgiving week!

Bluebonnet Anvil

"Bluebonnet Anvil Study"............12x9.....$100 plus shipping !
OK, Y'all...This moving 30 years of stuff from the farm is really depressing. My new studio is smaller than the one at the farm so, I have decided to REALLY CLEAR out old paintings and make this place new....The painting above will be the first to go to the first good home who wants it.
It's a study I did for a large painting about 5 years ago! Found it in a box!
THERE ARE LOTS of studies in the box. Nice enough that I didn't scrape them off, but needing to be "liquidated" asap. I will post a bunch from now till Christmas, so stay tuned!

Skipping Shadows

From "Last Year on the Farm - Summer Day, 24 paintings in 24 hours"
I am still in Easton Maryland...what a great place and a great show: the Waterfowl Festival.
I hear it is warm in Texas, and so this painting is what I am imagining...cloud shadows skipping over the farm.
When I return Monday afternoon, I will be packing the last few boxes to complete our move to Round Rock....and preparing to paint our 'Last Fall Day on the Farm"...this will be some day next week, 24 paintings in 24 hours. The last time I will do this at our farm.

These Three seemed to be telling secrets.

I miss the black cows but I am really enjoying the WHITE cows here...They were taken away this week to have AI...that means there will be little ones here in a few months! Maybe I will come back to paint them!

More on that, later...I am travelling to Maryland today for the easton Waterfowl Festival..come see me if you live out that way! I will try to post new paintings from the Blackwater wildlife refuge...if I can figure out how to do it...stay tuned...

The OLD Well

"Last Year on the Farm - The Old Well"
This well is hidden "at the bottom" of the land that we had for years, across Parmer Lane on the far end of the farm. Gilleland Creek runs through, beside this well, and there are some HUGE OLD pecan trees there.
Pa and Leonard (his right hand man for 58 years who shared the farm with us) would toss dead calves here to keep coyotes from hanging around...that means the well was full of old bones. I used to take my kid's respective soccer teams on midnight hay rides, telling scarey stories along the way. They were already freaked out by the time we got to the well, and seeing the bones stirred them up even more. The finale was when they were gathered around the well with flashlights, leaning over, peering down and not noticing that I was about to launch a soccer ball into the trees above them....crashing...Imagine 12 year olds in that scenario !
Please look at the website next week. We will post the WHOLE series (except the LAST 24. The paintings that are still available will be noted. There are MANY available still, and now you can claim them! God Bless you all!

Brightness

"Brightness" ....Whistlepik Christmas Miniatures Show........presale begins Nov. 16
This poppy painting will be one of mine on display at the Whistle Pik Christmas Miniatures Show in Fredericksburg, TX. Click the link above to see the MANY artists and 'masterpieces' to be shown. This is the best gallery in the USA, as far as I am concerned, and I am honored to be showing at this event for the 6th year....now, if I could just get them to let me in for the other 11 months! :)

Buzzard Hour

"Last Year on the Farm - Summer 24- Buzzard Hour"........available
A few weeks ago, I painted 24 paintings in 24 hours - a full "Summer Day Last Year on the Farm". This was the painting I did while the buzzards were hanging around, circling while eavesdroping on me. I was listening to the Longhorn vs. Central Florida(?) football game on the radio, and painting away!
Next week I will be in Easton, MD for the Waterfowl Festival and painting at the Blackwater Wildlife refuge with my buddies Adele Earnshaw and Joe Garcia and Melanie Fain...
When I get back I will paint our "Last Fall Day on the Farm". I am hoping for a good cold drizzly, typical fall day...it is all symbolic for me, now, and I NEED that, to put this era in its "place" in the history of my life....and to move on HAPPILY. God Bless Y'all!
Please look at the website next week. We will post the WHOLE series (except the LAST 240. The paintings that are still available will be noted. There are MANY available still, and now you can claim them! God Bless you all!

Life Goes On

"Last Year on the Farm - 10-28-2007.......available
(Before I continue... PLEASE DO NOT HIT "REPLY"...rather, please reply to my e-mail address...otherwise it goes to the whole group! I apologize to all of you who have been getting the extra mail...it's my fault for not including this link to my e-mail)
Now, about these white cows. They have been my comfort this last two weeks on the farm! They represent "Life Goes On!". All summer I watched the farm get overgrown: all life had moved away, no farming was taking place, the fields were getting weedy and my "company" was the drone of millions of new bugs finding refuge in the tall grass.
The new owners told us the other day that they will NOT develop this land any time soon. They are leasing it to farmers again and now we have these white cows...LIFE GOES ON!!!
Please look at the website next week. We will post the WHOLE series and the paintings that are still available will be noted. There are MANY available still, and now you can claim them! God Bless you all!
