1 Ballad: Chicken Chair

Detail: "Chicken Chair", from "The Rest"__48 x 36 oil for

The image above is a SMALL PART of my painting for a special museum event.

I call this part of the painting "Chicken Chair",
Over the next few days and weeks I will unveil the whole work, and tell of my inspiration.
My instructions from the curator were to "break out of my box", and explore the theme.
If you know my work, do you see anything "out of the box", here?

SO...I have been invited to "sing" part of a ballad!!
"Ballad of the Farm: Then. Now. Tomorrow." is a unique exhibit of artworks
Presented by Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art, with funding from NEA (National Endowment for the Arts),  MAAA, (Mid-America Arts Alliance), and others.
The opening reception is Saturday, May 23, 2015. See the BROCHURE
Eleven artists have interpreted historic photos from family farms of long ago.
I think I am the only artist from Texas!
I was given this opportunity last October, along with
HUNDREDS of amazing historic photos to inspire me.
My blog will take you along on my latest journey on the land!
Lets go!!

#48 Rooster Highlight

Rooster Highlight___6x6 oil on canvas panel
#48 in the Birdseed Project

This little rooster painting was actually painted at the nursing home while mom looked on from under the dryer! Each Wednesday she gets her hair done...the HIGHLIGHT of her whole week! When she was in the hospital a few months ago, I am petty sure it was my pep talks about going back to the salon that helped her get through!...I like sitting with her and visiting with Tina as mom gets "washed, rolled, dried and styled"...since she can't hear me while under the dryer, I painted and she watched...between dozing off sessions :)
Robin Cheers and I are sharing sketching, coffee and chocolate again Saturday, June 15th at
Joel's Coffee House. 9-noon. We supply the materials, and coffee!...you come and enjoy!
email if you are coming! $20

22 - Proud As....

Proud As...  ___8x6 oil on linen__$190 unframed
#22 in the Birdseed Project

Yesterday I met up with an artist friend and while we chatted over coffee, I painted this little rooster from a photo I have. I was biding time before a special reception for some of my high school art students. They had been working for weeks on special works for the Austin Rodeo Youth Western Art Competition. Students from all over Texas compete to get into the top 24. The judges were BIG TIME artists, Kyle Polzin, Dalhart Windberg and Sam Hurt.
Student art works will be auctioned off on March 22. 100% of the auction funds go to the artist for college. It also qualifies them for other scholarships.
So Here is the artwork that won GRAND CHAMPION...
I am so proud of my freshman art student Max Haager, and his great painting,
Papa Louie's Ranch!
I wish you could see the TEXTURE on this one!

CONGRATULATIONS, MAX!

This rooster was painted from a photo taken in Luckenbach, TX...the last time I taught in Fredericksburg....I heard that the peaches are being picked there, now and that this is a banner year for them....I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Se Acordo Pedro__Click to bid

__________________________________________________________________________________

"Se Acordo Pedro"___14 x 11 big!___for me___Click to bid

I teach a lesson in my workshops, which I call a "Chicken Clinic". The step-by-step process helps "chicken" painters be brave.
This is the biggest one I have done as a demo, (so far), and the title, "Se Acordo Pedro" means "Peter remembered"...I like this title, because my maiden name was "Pedro". Since it was a demo, the price is low for one this size!
After the demo, I made some subtle changes, including the slight silhouette of a background form...could it be Peter?
Join my next Chicken Clinic THIS SATURDAY at the Gadsden Museum of Art in Gadsden, Alabama. After the workshop we will have an Artists Reception for the "Last Year on the Farm " exhibit, and a gallery talk about the 365 farm paintings....

In yesterday's workshop, I demonstrated this one as the class painted along...it was my biggest "Chicken Clinic" demo, but Carrie painted along with a HUGE 24 x 18...wow! ...and all the chickens came out great! I will show the completed one tomorrow, and explain why it looks like this now ;)

Chicken Clinic CS

"Chicken Clinic CS"....8x6....$150 to the first to ask!
Well, this one is not on par with yesterday's "Jake", but here is the "fruit" of my last "Chicken Clinic". I teach workshops and somethimes we begin with a "Chicken Clinic", a step-by-step lesson where we get our brushes loosened up and take the white off the canvas...it's fun and helps you understand how oils work, guaranteed to make you BRAVE (not "chicken", get it?) and in the end you get a nice chicken (OK, a rooster) to take home...Next clinic: Saturday with a great group of artists in Austin!....get ready, y'all!
