Blue Trailer

Blue Trailer II___11x14 oil on linen panel___$850 unframed
I am painting things now for the Phippen Museum Western Art Show in Prescott, AZ. I'll be there in a few weeks with new stuff and visiting old friends! The painting here is another ne using my student's "palette droppings". Zoom in to see some surprise color!
I used a palette knife, here, and painted for another small audience at my mom's nursing home. I like to joke that they are the best audience, because many of them do not see so well, and they were all raised to be polite and say "That's GOOD, dear!" hahaha...

I will teach a workshop in Fredericksburg next month, and plan to show how to work with palette droppings. My theme again is "Capturing Impressions Quickly"...this year we will work outside less and draw MORE! Email me if you are interested! vvaughan8@yahoo.com

Trot Away

Trot Away___5x7 oil on canvas___$150
Working from my same "model" as the last two blog posts here is when she finally had had enough and trotted away. This sketch is another one using my "palette droppings" after a week of teaching "rookies". At the end of a few days the oils get sticky so I gather it all up. Hating to waste it, I have learned how to use it...I will teach a workshop in Fredericksburg next month, and plan to show how to work with palette droppings. My theme again is "Capturing Impressions Quickly"...this year we will work outside less and draw MORE! Email me if you are interested! vvaughan8@yahoo.com

Cat Blues

Cat Blues___a little sketch

Last week I sat with a friend over coffee. The weather was so nice that the door to the coffee shop was open and this little cat kept roaming into the doorway, not coming TOO far into the shop....I think the coffee shop employees had adopted this kitty, because there was a bowl out for her and she seemed really comfortable there!.

Coffee Shop Sketch

Coffee Shop Sketch___14 x 11 watercolor pencil on paper___$75 includes shipping
Every week I meet up with an artist friend and we go to a coffee shop or a tea room to just "talk shop"... Last week we had some art supplies in our purses, so we whipped them out and scribbled out some sketches. My little watercolor above is the young woman who sat by the window working on her laptop. Go look at the work of my friend, Robin Cheers!

Sketch of M.C.

Sketch of M.C.___a lesson on values
Each week my art students have sketches to do on their own. I usually take THEIR sketchbook and do a demo so they can see what it is I am looking for.
This one is about CONTAINING the shape of the values...(that is, the light areas and dark areas on a face)...contain by outlining the shape of the value, whether it be a shadow or a highlight....If you can see a shape, and get its size and proportion "right" in relation to the shapes around it, you can draw a pretty good likeness, and do it fairly quickly!...I am not sure these high school students believe me, so I show them! This one is M.C.....

Sketch-Samantha

Sketch - Samantha in Class_____not for sale
I keep nagging my students to put a BOUNDARY on those values...it's the BEST way to do that "shading", and if taken to a careful extreme, you can get a better likeness this way! The "boundaries" of values have a shape, a proportion, and a relationship with the other shapes, and if done well, you actually get a likeness!....
Hard to explain in words, but I can SHOW YOU if you come to a workshop! hahaha!
I just updated my schedule with another workshop in September. Go see my schedule!

Duke-ish

Duke-ish___18 x 12 watercolorpencil with wash____$100
This month in art class (I teach a few high school art classes in Austin at Hyde Park), the students are doing watercolor works, so I will post a few more of my class demos.
I learn BEST by WATCHING, so I assume these students do, too...thus, my classes consist of a lot of demos. I do them quickly, because there are also many who learn BEST by DOING, and they want to get on with the assignment!
Which way do YOU learn best???
THis was a quick sketch from a photo, and everyone said it resembled John Wayne, so I call it "Duke-ish" in his honor!
I hope you will see my updated SCHEDULE...please come to one of these events if you are in the area...all are somewhere between South Carolina and Arizona and Montana! :)

Sketch of A.R.

Sketch of A.R.__my student
Well, I am back from Nebraska...for a few days now! Texas has cooled off since I left a couple weeks ago!
The sketch above is a class demo for the art students at Hyde Park Baptist School. I teach a couple of morning classes there, now. We did figure drawing in Sept, and now we are painting...more on that, later.
I left Nebraska with MANY new friends and good memories! Had fun on the backroads looking for painting locations with great artists... and looking for Combines...eating ribeye at Big Fella's in Linwood....twice!!...hitting a deer on the way back...God, please heal her....Becoming a fan of artist Dale Nicholls ....Chit chatting for hours with Anna and Amanda...and Allen about reviving small towns: I say food tours like wine tours, and in David City, NE, we can include art, architecture,....and build a couple of B&B accommodations ....
***SIGN UP for my November 9-11 workshop in Fredericksburg
, TX...full moon!
***COME MEET ME at a reception and showing of about 100 paintings from Last Year on the Farm. THURSDAY, Oct. 27, 5-7 Riverbend Church Gallery, Austin, TX ...

Early at Cecil's

“Early at Cecil’s” 12 x 12 oil SOLD
Here is the one which was awarded first place at the Bluebonnet Blues Arts Festival in Marble Falls, TX yesterday. I barely got out of the car and was lugging my gear up the street to find a scenic spot to paint, but never got past this courtyard…the light was perfect…the models stayed only long enough to get a quick pencil sketch and a few color notes…more “models” took their place, so I borrowed their skin tone to finish this painting…..
About 40 artists painted for the competition, and three were awarded cash and medals specially designed by noted Texas sculptor Dan Pogue . (I am most honored to now own THREE of his sculptures!!)...The awards judge was Gordon Fowler, an artist whose work is amazing impressionism...to watch him paint is pure art...HE's SO FAST!!!
My favorite painting in the show was a small, loose oil painting of a pale blue Harley motorcycle...I couldn't take my eyes off it...I looked for it at the end of the day, and found out it ws Gordon's! It might have looked bad to award first to himself, but I wouldn't have blamed him :)

Famous John - Marble Falls

"Famous John - Marble Falls" 12 x 16 oil $600
At the Bluebonnet Blues Arts Festival this weekend I painted with nearly 40 artists in a little competition where we scattered and painted the town. On Main Street in Marble Falls, Texas there's a courtyard with this big Old Oak. This gentleman seemed to enjoy all the music as he sat here, so I pulled out a canvas to paint one more quickie at 20 minutes till deadline to turn in art...this is the fastest I have ever painted one this size!...when his friends saw me painting him, they came and gave me his name...I made him "Famous" :)
There is amazing food...crawfish, BBQ...and the art is all hanging at the gallery across from Patton's....I painted Patton's at dusk on Friday, with thunderstorms in the area(it won Honorable Mention)...I also painted Cecil's cafe, which took first place! The festival lasts through today, and if you can GET THERE! It costs $15 to get in, but just the MUSIC is worth it....please go by and see the art!!!
