WORKSHOP LOCATIONS will all be on or near the Conejos River, between Rocky Mountain Lodge and Antonito. This is a 30 mile span, but we will only go to one general area a day, and not do a lot of driving once we get there.
Three FULL DAYS will be divided into two daily sessions. Two half day sessions on the first and last days. Our sessions will include Artist Demonstrations by V….Vaughan, some hand-outs, brief discussion and theory instruction while V…. paints. An entire session or two will be devoted to SKETCHING: working either on canvas or in sketchbooks. Perspective Problems will be tackled! Capturing impressions QUICKLY… drawing without lines…I have a LOT to say about sketching!!!
The locations have wonderful variety. Things you will choose from: Mountain Vistas, River Color, Warm GREENS, Big Monsoon Skies, Sage Brush Meadows, Dark GREENS, Old Churches, Crumbled Adobe, Barns, Dude Ranch Corrals, Light GREENS, Cattle, Calves, Horses and Foals,  Cowboys and Cowgirls, and Cool GREENS.
A SPECIAL TOPIC I ALWAYS COVER IS HOW WE SEE LIGHT, and
WHAT IS COLOR, ANYWAY? We learn a lot about these by intense observation at the extreme ends of the day: SUNRISE and SUNSET. I have planned this class to coincide with the FULL MOON, so we will also observe and paint MOONRISE AND MOONSET, which will happen at the same time as the sunrise/sunset! It is a FASCINATING study and is sure to cause a leap forward in your painting progress, if you have never studied such things…I HAVE FUN WITH IT, TOO! Having taught high school artists for over 20 years, I know how to keep it simple, so that you can do what you like to do most….PAINT!!!

Dusky Docks - 40 x 30

Dusky Docks___40 x 30 BIG oil on Gallery wrap
Available at Rockport Art Festival, July 6-7, Rockport, TX
or available from ME!

A few months ago I did the study for this one, which sold in Charleston...since it sold, I have been chomping at the bit to do a large version....
I love SUMMER and the humid coastal areas this time of year. Yes, I LOVE the humidity and even the SMELL of the coast and boatyards!...so much so that RIGHT NOW, I am headed to New Orleans to gather more "steamy reference"...My sister is tagging along, and we will catch up to my artist friend, Robin Cheers, who is there right now, hanging out in all the cafes, and eating her way through the restaurants and urban areas, sketching and texting me to "hurry up" and get there....We are hoping to do some sort of collaboration on the theme, so I can't wait to see what she has done!...
Actually, the plan is to work separately while there, and then get our stuff together afterwards to see what each of us did! (but since she and her family got there first, they are keeping in touch, to make sure I don't miss something I NEED to see!...or eat!!!)
I'll be looking for a boatyard or a farm!...and a beignet

Night Textures

Night Textures_8x10 oil on canvas___$450
We were here for the full moon, and I have been painting every day to present new works for the second annual Conejos Fire House Art Show. I'll be joining the best artists who live in this community, and some are internationally known and collected! We are expecting a nice turnout, but this is still a very "secret" little gem of a show! A community down the road, with BIG homes and full-time residents has jumped on board with the artists and is hosting an Art Walk on July 28...so if you miss this one, come see my Colorado wet paint at the Bear Creek Art Walk...there will be another full moon that week, so I am reserving time to paint it!...ALSO, I have finalized some accommodations for next year's canyon workshop. YOU TOO can paint here with me in 2013! I just need to set a date in July or August...if you want to "suggest" a week, I would love t have your input if you think you can come!!! Thinking late July-early August!!
Here are some locations for a few of my workshops. email me if you want more info on any of these...

Before the Blue

Before the Blue__12x16 oil on linen panel__$1100, unframed
This full moon rose over our canyon a few days ago. I have spent a lot of time studying to paint the night. I try to schedule all my workshops to include moon features, so that I can teach artists what I have observed about this special kind of light!

Here are some locations for a few of my workshops. email me if you want more info on any of these...

La Luna Sobre Conejos____9x12 oil on canvas___$550 for Conejos Fire House Show
Our summer vacations are spent along Colorado's Conjos River. This canyon is remote, yet populated by some of the nicest people one could know! The big "season" is RIGHT NOW....Independence Day, and all of July! This tight knit summer community celebrates the season with cook-outs, and get-togethers where everyone feels welcome. Last year we celebrated the opening of our own little fire department. With Colorado fires on the news, we all are grateful for this, and support the annual events to raise funds for it! On July 13-14 we'll have our 2nd Annual Fire House Art Show, featuring some artists in this canyon....Look up the works of Charlie Ewing, Rick Howell, Jim Gilmore, Pat Haberman, Zella Meeks and ME!...I have been painting the spectacular moon...driving home the other night, I was welcomed into the canyon by this full moon over the Conejos River.
Here are some locations for a few of my workshops. email me if you want more info on any of these...

11-11-11 Moonset

11-11-11 Moonset ___6x8 oil on linen panel___$190 unframed
I miss my workshop buddies! Anyone who will get up before dawn and drag their paints out in the cold (it was 25 degrees one morning!) is a FRIEND of mine!!! And I have more than a dozen new ones after last week in Fredericksburg!...
Below is this painting above, in its plein air state! When painting fast (which I have to do when the light changes quickly), I often lay down only enough details that I can finish it later. All the info I needed in the field is there!...I was able to do a couple more such "starts" before the sun got too high...now I am home, finishing these! You will see such "finishes" in the days ahead! Let me know what you think! ESPECIALLY those of you who were with me when I started this one :)

Moonset Elevators in Kansas

Moonset Elevators in Kansas__8x6 oil ___for Passing America:The Great Plains
I just now compared this one with the painting I posted yesterday...Both are "drive-by" paintings, prepared for my upcoming exhibit. Both were painted along the same stretch of highway, about 30 minutes apart. The time difference is evident by the color in the sky! As the sun got higher (at my back), the full moon dissolved into the clear sky...The morning moonset is one of my favorite subjects, and is a focus of my upcoming workshop ...I hope you will come paint with me in November...get some sleep first! We will paint the "extremes" of the daylight :) Email Bill for info: bill@fbgartschool.com

Moonset Morning Over Kansas

Moonset Morning Over Kansas ___8x6 oil on linen panel___for Passing America...exhibit reception in Oct.

I just now returned from Kansas...we took our son to college. This is my last one, and it feels a little bit strange. For the first time in over 27 years, I do not have a child at home, nor am I waiting for one to "check in" with me tonight!....I do not like how this feels at ALL...
We left the boy with his football coaches last night and went back to the hotel. I was up all night, taking my son's dog outside every few hours (she had a stomach issue....probably missing her boy)...so I saw the full moon at all stages of its trek across the sky!
On the way home this morning the full moon was going down as the morning was rising behind us...It's one of my FAVORITE things to paint! I will be teaching THIS in early November! Check your moon calendar and you will see that the full moon is on the 9-11. PLEASE JOIN ME in Fredericksburg, TX, and we will focus on this and Nocturne painting! It is a BLAST to paint the extreme ends of the day. e-mail Bill for info bush@fbgartschool.com
