To Sea

To Sea                       16x12 oil for SEWE

Do you follow me on Instagram? @vvaughan8
If you do, then you saw this already....I wish Instagram did not make EVERYTHING square!
I posted the "start" of mr. seagull the other day...went home and finished the background but hated it, so I "knifed it off" and slashed in...THIS....
I kinda like!

*****
A story today: I got a call from "Rex". A fine older gentleman who I befriended at my mom's nursing home. It has been MANY MONTHS since I went back. I have WANTED to go see old friends there, but was fearing the sadness, so kept avoiding it. Then REX called. He wanted me to come see some new artwork in his room....It was a GREAT excuse to FINALLY go back. So I bought a big bag of birdseed and drove over!
We had a very nice visit, and Rex had collected a coffee can full of Padre Island beach sand that he had saved for me all this time! He wanted me to put it at the bird feeders for the birds! That made this a PERFECT DAY to post this new Birdseed Project Painting!!!
Also, Rex wants to sell some of his prized western art collection. Has anyone heard of Don Bowlin and David A. Carver?

Bay Day

Bay Day___6x12 oil on panel__Rockport Art Festival, July 5, 2013
I started this plein air oil the last time I was down in Rockport, TX. A few days ago I uncovered it, unfinished in my studio and could see enough info that it was easy to finish. I will set it aside for the Rockport Art Festival, in early July, unless someone wants it BEFORE then!
As I type this, I am surrounded by winter's last grip on the Great Plains! So STAY TUNED for some winter paintings, which will be a real exercise for this Texas girl! I figure it will be EASY!! I brought a big tube of WHITE...
I am in Nebraska to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art! My exhibit, Last Year on the Farm was their first EVER exhibit, and that's when I became friends with the museum! I come up here EVERY CHANCE I can, and get my fill of agrarian (FARM) life, which surrounds this area of Nebraska....FRIDAY thru Sunday I will be LEARNING from painters Michael Albrectsen and Michael Bingham, both from Utah (AMAZING ARTISTS). If you are nearby PLEASE try to come to ONE EVENT here in David City, NE. I can PROBABLY get you into the workshop, even at the last minute   vvaughan8@yahoo.com
OR, come meet everyone at the opening reception for the current exhibition "The Barn as a Chapel", presented by artist Michael Wilson. Saturday, April 13, 6-8 pm...you can meet me and ALL the
Michaels, and tour this little GEM of a museum....

Surf Bum

Surf Bum__10x8 oil on linen panel__to be exhibited at SEWE
I saw this "surf bum" in Maine a few years ago. She played and played and never looked up....tail wagging furiously...There was also a black lab with her, and they ripped around the surf for quite a while...I put up a picture on facebook the other day and asked, "Cats or Dogs"...though I love them both, I think I would have to say "dogs"...
So, I shipped 230 pounds of paintings to Charleston yesterday, and received a lot of fun comments about that today. My friend Robin Cheers was reminded of a funny Dilbert cartoon...something about selling art by the pound...

Before Ike

"Samuel in Galveston"___8x6___This one is in MY collection

When they were younger, I made it a point to take my kids to Galveston every year...like my parents did with us growing up! I am the youngest of SEVEN kids, and my oldest brother was in medical school in Galveston when our family started visiting there a lot. Lately, I have frequented Rockport more often, but there is NOTHING like the beaches in Galveston: Texans either LOVE them or HATE them...there is no in-between with Galveston. Ike messed things up for now, but Galveston will be BACK!!!

Sunset Hour By Charlotte's

Cove Yellows

"Cove Yellows" ___6 x 8 oil on linen ___Click to bid
I do not often sell these daily paintings with auctions, but for the next few weeks, there will be an auction a day of my "Last 24 hours" on the farm. Each auction will last 7-10 days....And so today is a PRACTICE auction....let's see if I can do all the ebay details to make it easy...just click on the link and make a bid! Or click here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140237506021 If you see anything weird, please tell me!!!!
This painting above was my morning demo at the last workshop day in Rockport, TX. I teach there almost every month. We have ONE LONG DAY of plein air painting, and take on different challenges. But one thing stays the same: we ALWAYS greet the sun at Cove Harbor. It's a little bit south of town and ALWAYS gorgeous at sunrise. The next workshop day is June 21. It will likely be a hot saturday, and the plan is to do the famous rockport oak trees, but we have the Art Center to escape to, if the heat is too mean.

***Tomorrow will start the auction for the 24 paintings of my "Last DAY on the Farm"...this group of paintings is NOT traveling with my 365 paintings of "Last Year on the Farm", so I am selling them NOW, and keeping the project separate from "Last Year..."
Here is the link to the first farm auction...a preview just for my friends! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140237500720

Later at Caro's

"Later at Caro's" .... 6 x 6 oil ....$100

Immediately after finishing my birthday painting (see yesterday) I took up another canvas and painted this one as more storms rolled in. There is a real thrill about painting to the sounds of approaching thunder...and having an escape door for shelter nearby!

Easter Birthday at Caro's

"Easter Birthday..." 6 x 6 oil My birthday present to me :)
Easter Sunday, April 8 was my birthday...I was geared up for a warm sunrise service on the beach to commemorate the resurrection of Christ, but the service was moved indoors...it snowed a few miles north of Rockport, TX and was bitter cold on the beach...not our usual April weather...well...SOMETIMES!
A couple of Roseate Spoonbills made my day as I painted this one...they flew by as I was painting the now green marsh grasses by Caro's place, and provided a spot of "complementary color" for my birthday present!!!

Whisper

"Whisper" 6x8 oil Collection of Robin Cheers as soon as she comes to get it
My friend Robin and her daughter Anna were my roommates during my Rockport Workshop a couple Saturdays ago. Robin is a FINE painter (click the link to see her Painter's Journal)...She is also a fine friend, agreeing to be our workshop models for the day. She and Anna just visited with each other and let us photograph them. Robin knows the challenges of painting live models, so she was kind enough to move in slow mothion for us!!!
This little sketch is just a start! I can't wait to drag them down for another modeling session. I will announce it here when that will happen...probably in mid May or June. Please make plans to join the workshop!

Rockport Dusk

"Rockport Dusk" _________8x10_________available
Last Friday evening in Rockport, I went to my favorite place with my friend Mary and we painted til it got so dark we couldn't see. I painted the Pelican first (scroll down to see him) and then this one, virtually in the dark....I tell the artists that I teach that the first thing to do as an outdoor painter is toKNOW your pallette and to be consistant with where you put thyour colors....I have finally learned to stay put with my mixing and not "SPRAWL" color all over the pallette...that way I can paint faster, without having to look for things... This one will ship with my art to Charleston unless someone wants it! My 8 x 10's go for $450 but the First one to reply gets it for $300...let me know! I take all kinds of payments...

Rockport Sparkle

"Rockport Sparkle"________8x10___________available
Once again, the painting I thought I hated while doing it, is my FAVORITE painting of the weekend! (A lesson for you artists to "DON'T scrape it off" too soon!
This was my last demonstration of the weekend, as I taught a group of teachers in an educators' conference at the Rockport Center for the Arts....I will teach a plein air workshop one day a month in the spring, for anyone interested! The Saturday sessions begin on Feb. 24.
THIS WEEK I will paint 24 in 24 hours "Winter Day Last Year on the Farm" ...like I did in the fall. I am watching the weather and moon phases to find the best , most "interesting" 24 hour period, so if anyone in the Austin area has a thought about it, PLEASE let me know! Don't hit reply....click here vvaughan8@yahoo.com

White on the Rocks______click to bid

"White on the Rocks" 8x6

These birds are found on the Texas coast. They are not too shy and I just LOVE their bright yellow feet!....I saw this one in Rockport, TX not long ago. I liked the background and the rocks and wanted to paint them...This is a reminder to all that I teach an all-day plein air workshop one Saturday a month in Rockport. We cover a lot in that one day and it is my main desire to have students become familiar and COMFORTABLE painting outside on location. The next workshop day coming up is on SUNDAY, Jan 28. I will be there Saturday doing some sessions with art educators from all over. But on Sunday, anyone can come and take the class. We will start after church (1 - 1:30 or so) and have 2 sessions: the first will be about planes and edges and what light does on the edges (so, we'll paint architecture) ...the second session will be "DUSK". Many of you liked the dusk paintings I have done lately, so I will teach how I do it... I believe there is a new moon that week, too, so I'm hoping for clear weather...e-mail me if you'd like to take the workshop

Rockport Cloudline.....Click to Bid

"Rockport Cloud Line"..................................................................6 x 6 oil

This was painted last week on location in Rockport, TX. We marveled that the clouds stayed like this for a couple hours! Really! I learned from Caro, a local who has sailed the world, that the clouds come off the water and build up along the shore as they hit land...Great to know, if you are a painter painting "moving targets" (our theme that day). I have been teaching a workshop series: one Saturday each month in the fall. Please join our great painting group "en plein air" for the last Fall class on Sat. Dec. 16. *note to my class....see how much better it looks with the figures on the beach?
