ITINERARY: DRAFT

WORKSHOP LOCATIONS will all be on or near the Conejos River, between Rocky Mountain Lodge and Antonito. This is a 30 mile span, but we will only go to one general area a day, and not do a lot of driving once we get there.
Three FULL DAYS will be divided into two sessions. Two half day sessions on the first and last days. Our sessions will include Artist Demonstrations by V….Vaughan, some hand-outs, brief discussion and theory instruction while V…. paints. An entire session or two will be devoted to SKETCHING: working either on canvas or in sketchbooks. Perspective Problems will be tackled! Capturing impressions QUICKLY… drawing without lines…I have a LOT to say about sketching!!!
The locations have wonderful variety. Things you will choose from: Mountain Vistas, River Color, Warm GREENS,
Big Monsoon Skies, Sage Brush Meadows, Dark GREENS, Old Churches, Crumbled Adobe, Barns, Dude Ranch Corrals, Light GREENS, Cattle, Calves, Horses and Foals,  Cowboys and Cowgirls, and Cool GREENS.
A SPECIAL TOPIC I ALWAYS COVER IS HOW WE SEE LIGHT, and WHAT IS COLOR, ANYWAY? We learn a lot about these by intense observation at the extreme ends of the day: SUNRISE and SUNSET. I have planned this class to coincide with the FULL MOON, so we will also observe and paint MOONRISE AND MOONSET, which will happen at the same time as the sunrise/sunset! It is a FASCINATING study and is sure to cause a leap forward in your painting progress, if you have never studied such things…I HAVE FUN WITH IT, TOO! Having taught high school artists for over 20 years, I know how to keep it simple, so that you can do what you like to do most….PAINT!!!
Here is a ROUGH DRAFT of our workshop…You will receive a detailed itinerary when we meet on Tuesday. There will be maps and phone numbers and other details… OUR EXACT LOCATIONS WILL BE GIVEN WHEN YOU REGISTER!

My friend Barbara lives in Port Lavaca, and a few weeks ago Robin Cheers and I went down there to paint and of course we painted along the way! But we had a fun time sitting in the car, painting downtown PL while lightning flashed.
Robin and I are having a Chocolate and Chiaroscuro event...that means WE DRAW, and everyone else enjoys CHOCOLATE, coffees, and other Holiday goodies from Joe's and the Austin Truffle Company! Come meet us and hang out on  Wednesday Nov. 20

Behind the Studio

Behind the Studio, St. Jo ___8x10 oil on panel
Last weekend was the first Annual (I hope!) plein air and gallery event in St. Jo, TX. Hosted by Davis & Blevins Gallery, which is the home place of great cowgirl artist,
Donna Howell-Sickles....the event was a big fundraiser for the Montague County Child Welfare Board, and I think a lot of money was raised with the art, auctions and galas. Of course for me and the other artists, it was all about "hanging" with other artists...some, my heros, like Donna. LOOK UP her work and see if it doesn't make you smile...She is one of those artists whose work is 100% unique, and can be identified just by it's style...I like that!
My painting above is the back of her studio and gallery on Main Street.

First Stroll

First Stroll__10 x 8 oil on linen___A commission for Up Against the Wall Gallery, Tennessee

I usually paint whatever I feel like painting, but occasionally I get asked to do something "on purpose". This couple was married at the family farm place in the beautiful hills of Tennessee. The reception was there, too, and they sent a lovely photo of their first stroll across the footpath. I just shipped it to them today, with a second painting of the farm for their parents...I will post that one tomorrow.

The "Dove of the Desert" is San Xavier Mission in Tucson, AZ. "Dove in the Night" is my painting of this solemn place under the moonlight.
Cowgirl Up! kicks off in about a week. It is the best gathering of western women artists in the country... an event full of fun and fabulous art.
For the next three days, I will post the large works I created especially for this event.

Duck Creek Lightning Night

Duck Creek Lightnings__24x30 oil on linen__a commission
I have a commission to paint a ranch in Nebraska. I have been there several times, most recently in June (Tina was my travel buddy)...The very first day there, we had the ranch to ourselves, so we tromped around with the help of some "wheels" they provided...This place is situated on the Platte River, and there were miles of wild places to explore. My FAVORITE impression happened as we pulled away at dusk, and I tried to capture it here. Storms were approaching from the west, with thunderheads building, and I am just sure I saw some distant lightning.  In the wetlands were DOZENS of "lightning bugs" and they seemed to be blinking replies to the lightning in the clouds....

Another night on the Conejos River in southern Colorado....There is a special way I approach painting at night. Actually I have SEVERAL approaches, and I am incorporating these lessons into my current workshop theme. Each workshop includes at least ONE evening paintout, which starts before sundown. See the partial list below, and keep in touch, because I am finalizing details on a few of these SOON!

Night Textures

Night Textures_8x10 oil on canvas___$450
We were here for the full moon, and I have been painting every day to present new works for the second annual Conejos Fire House Art Show. I'll be joining the best artists who live in this community, and some are internationally known and collected! We are expecting a nice turnout, but this is still a very "secret" little gem of a show! A community down the road, with BIG homes and full-time residents has jumped on board with the artists and is hosting an Art Walk on July 28...so if you miss this one, come see my Colorado wet paint at the Bear Creek Art Walk...there will be another full moon that week, so I am reserving time to paint it!...ALSO, I have finalized some accommodations for next year's canyon workshop. YOU TOO can paint here with me in 2013! I just need to set a date in July or August...if you want to "suggest" a week, I would love t have your input if you think you can come!!! Thinking late July-early August!!

La Luna Sobre Conejos____9x12 oil on canvas___$550 for Conejos Fire House Show
Our summer vacations are spent along Colorado's Conjos River. This canyon is remote, yet populated by some of the nicest people one could know! The big "season" is RIGHT NOW....Independence Day, and all of July! This tight knit summer community celebrates the season with cook-outs, and get-togethers where everyone feels welcome. Last year we celebrated the opening of our own little fire department. With Colorado fires on the news, we all are grateful for this, and support the annual events to raise funds for it! On July 13-14 we'll have our 2nd Annual Fire House Art Show, featuring some artists in this canyon....Look up the works of Charlie Ewing, Rick Howell, Jim Gilmore, Pat Haberman, Zella Meeks and ME!...I have been painting the spectacular moon...driving home the other night, I was welcomed into the canyon by this full moon over the Conejos River.
Here are some locations for a few of my workshops. email me if you want more info on any of these...

One Way Strike

One Way___24 x 30 oil on linen____available at Cowgirl Up!___$4500

I have wanted to paint this one since I did the plein air study back on our farm a few years ago. Read the story about it here.

The study was part of my Last Year on the Farm exhibit, and ended up being purchased by an art museum, The Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art...

SPEAKING OF MUSEUMS!...I participate in many exhibits and over the years my paintings have been purchased by several museums for their permanent collections. One such museum recently had a special showing of selections from their collection, and MY PAINTING was stolen off the wall! Of course the museum has an elaborate security system and cameras everywhere, but the person was able to leave with the painting, without alarms. So the investigation began, but it was not long before the thief was overwhelmed with guilt and decided to return the work...

WOW! An art heist! I told the musum director to please NOT TELL ME if the theif admits that he got my painting home and decided that it did not look too good over their couch....

Moonlift

Moonlift___8x6 oil study on linen panel___$190
Yesterday's painting is literally the "other side" of this one. I painted it facing west as the sun went down, and called it "Sunslide" for a special reason. Immediately after painting it, I turned to the east to paint the full moon rising. But because of the cloud cover, we never really saw the moon, but could see the "lift" of moonlight from behind the clouds. So that explains the title of this one....Both were "lessons" or demos painted during my last workshop in Texas. We had been hoping for some interesting skies and were mostly given CLEAR BLUE skies...until this one evening.
