Horizon in Flames__Nebraska, sunrise,

Horizon in Flames__6x8 study for "Passing America..." exhibit in 2011

South of David City, NE the sun came through morning clouds as Allen and I set out for the start of Day 2 of this leg of my trip "Passing America: The Great Plains". Click the link to see what this project is about.

I painted fast and furiously this morning, because there were morning thunderheads on the plains, GREAT sunrise color, and beautiful views left and right!...I was working on the fog study (posted yesterday) when this view distracted me, so I took up a new panel and began this one. While this little painting was nothing more than a few color notes, we turned the car and I saw something BETTER, and moved on to paint it instead...I had the notes I needed to finish this one AFTER I painted the "better" one...I will post the "better" one tomorrow :)

My title, Horizon in Flames is derived from a song lyric which mentions Nebraska and the Plains, and has become my personal THEME song for Passing America: The Great Plains.

Later at Caro's

"Later at Caro's" .... 6 x 6 oil ....$100

Immediately after finishing my birthday painting (see yesterday) I took up another canvas and painted this one as more storms rolled in. There is a real thrill about painting to the sounds of approaching thunder...and having an escape door for shelter nearby!

Easter Birthday at Caro's

"Easter Birthday..." 6 x 6 oil My birthday present to me :)
Easter Sunday, April 8 was my birthday...I was geared up for a warm sunrise service on the beach to commemorate the resurrection of Christ, but the service was moved indoors...it snowed a few miles north of Rockport, TX and was bitter cold on the beach...not our usual April weather...well...SOMETIMES!
A couple of Roseate Spoonbills made my day as I painted this one...they flew by as I was painting the now green marsh grasses by Caro's place, and provided a spot of "complementary color" for my birthday present!!!

Twelve Strokes at ACE

"Twelve Strokes at ACE Basin" ___________5 x 10_____ $100
Before I start posting farm paintings again, I have this one more from ACE Basin Wildlife Refuge in South Carolina....I was painting all day with Joe Garcia and Adele Earnshaw and Adele had the great idea to limit our next painting to a certain number of strokes....Joe picked the spot, we decided on TWELVE strokes (don't lift the brush till you are through!)....Here is mine! It got a little damaged on my flight the next day, but has some "character" :)

Blackwater Greens

"Blackwater Greens" 6 x 6.......................$100 TODAY
If you are looking in for the first time today, scroll down for other paintings from the Blackwater Refuge in Maryland. I painted there a couple weeks ago. At just the right moment as the sun rose, the water in the distance actually looked minty green! It felt strange to "apply" that color, and I did not like the painting that day, but now, it is one of my favorites, lately! This one is available.
