Lulu

"Lulu Vinella"_______5x7 or 6x8 or something________Collection of Ray Vinella
I drove from Colorado Springs to Taos today, over roads I'd never been on...it was so neat to see some of the mountains we always pass by from a different angle! Particularly San Antonio Mountain in New Mexico. We usually pass right next to it on 285, but today I was many miles east of it, so I saw it pass by from a distance.
In Taos I had some great visits with old friends and NEW ONES (more on the new ones tomorrow). I got to have a great visit with an art mentor to many, the beloved Ray Vinella. I have known him and his pal, Lulu for many years. Last time I was there I took pictures of Lulu, with the intention of painting her as a gift to Ray. Today I had my paints and some new little canvas, so I asked Ray if I could paint there in his living room... Lulu was a "moving target", and a fun study, but she's much cuter than this!!! This little painting stayed at Ray's house. Thank You, and God Bless You, Ray!

THIS SATURDAY, Oct. 4 is the Collectors Classic at the Museum of Western Art in Kerrville, TX. If you are in Central Texas this weekend, please come to this event and say hello! Some great art and artists will be on hand. On the way there, stop by Whistle Pik in Fredericksburg to see my friend Denise Mahlke's show, too.

Saturday, October 18 - Workshop day in Calvert, TX. All abilities welcome. We can carpool from Austin, if you contact me vvaughan8@yahoo.com

Night Lights

"Night Lights"___12 x 12 gallery wrap____available at Open Doors Gallery, Illumination Show
Moonlight is nothing more than a reflection of the SOURCE of light...the sun. So, also is our warm greeting (illustrated by the light in the window)...nothing more than a reflection of the Giver of hospitality and acceptance....that's my interpretation of this painting.
This was painted specially for the Illumination show at The Open Doors Gallery in Austin. Opening reception is Friday night 7-9 pm. That's a football night but I will be there for a few minutes...come by for a "hello" and see some art produced on the theme, "Illumination". All the artists have created works, many 3-D works of sculpture and glass, and all have interpretations of the theme....
I painted this on a gallery wrap canvas and the moon itself is painted on the top panel of the canvas.

Mom's Moving Target

"Mom's Moving Target"___5 x 7___one from MY collection
I stood on the deck, overlooking the gulf of Mexico on Galveston Island and painted this shrimp boat for my mom...when she recently went to live at a nursing home, she gave it back to me, so I will keep it. It's full of memories. One good thing about plein air painting is that it makes MEMORIES! If you come to a workshop, you will hear LOTS of stories of my plein air adventures. Stories of wind, lightning, attacking squirrels, paintings run over, and more. I have photos and props to back up the stories! hahaha.
Speaking of this, see my workshop schedule below. I added some things today.
Also, PLEASE consider bidding on the painting posted on 9-20...here is the link to look at it. 60% of the funds will go directly to disaster relief in Galveston.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140268951407
Here is the latest word from the Galveston area...a correction on an earlier post...sorry to be so wordy :)

Hello,
We have a beach house at Surfside. Surfside is NOT gone. There is alot of destruction. All of the houses that had been condemned on the front row of beach drive and not moved are gone. ...we may not have electricity for 5-10 days. . Texans are not like Katrina victims. The place is hopping with activity cleaning up. Go to SurfsideTX.org for pictures of damage, but they don't show the properties with little damage. ... Sunny Beaches......R.O.

Galveston Pier Lights_CLICK TO BID...for THEM

"Galveston Pier Lights" __6" x 6" oil on canvas panel___by V....Vaughan_ CLICK TO BID . READ WHY....
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140268951407

This little pier is gone...I can't seem to get Galveston off my mind, so I am offering this painting for sale at auction, and will donate 60% of the full auction price for hurricane Ike relief. I will send the money to the Texas Baptist Men Disaster Relief, who I know to be a reputable, dependable organization with lots of financial accountability. They have units that clean up mud and flood damage, they have trailer units for laundry and showers and meals...providing all this and more to disaster victims. I actually took some disaster relief training with them a few years ago and am VERY impressed. I want to spend some time helpingwith them, but have to wait till we have fewer family obligations. So, for now, I can PAINT. This is a small original oil painting, and I am hoping the bidders will jack the price up for Ike Disaster relief. Pass it along!

On the Island

"On the Island"-----5 x 7 ----collection of the artist
I painted this a couple years ago on Galveston Island....We were staying in a house on the beach that had this wonderful view. My mom sat with me on the porch while I painted this, one morning...the trip was so fun and meaningful that I KEPT ALL THE PAINTIGS....if I want to make a living as a painter, I need to NOT have anymore meaningful vacations! hahaha

Please do not forget our friends on the Texas Coast. The media is not making much of it, but friends there tell me it's DEVESTATION down there...I wonder if this little row of houses is there...I suppose NOT, since it lies between Pirates Beach and Surfside, and I hear they are both GONE... This was on on Jamaica Beach...

Before Ike

"Samuel in Galveston"___8x6___This one is in MY collection

When they were younger, I made it a point to take my kids to Galveston every year...like my parents did with us growing up! I am the youngest of SEVEN kids, and my oldest brother was in medical school in Galveston when our family started visiting there a lot. Lately, I have frequented Rockport more often, but there is NOTHING like the beaches in Galveston: Texans either LOVE them or HATE them...there is no in-between with Galveston. Ike messed things up for now, but Galveston will be BACK!!!

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE....watch here for details!

Dappled Lab

"Dappled Lab"____10 x 8___an old one___$150 to the first to ask!
Well, I will be "retiring' some paintings from my private collection this week...watch the blog for bargains! Here is one I have had and used for reference for a couple of years....I need its frame, so it needs a home!
I painted this yellow lab at an art fair, under some pecan trees in the dappled sunlight...thus the name!
Ike update: We here in Central Texas had some wind, no rain and lots of family and friends sleeping on our couches last night. All is well here, but please pray for the folks in Galveston area...

Lost to IKE

"Lost to IKE"_____9x12 aka Beach Busyness ________not available
This one sold a while ago, but as I sayed tranfixed to the weather channel today, I was so sad to see this very building getting torn up by the hurricane, Ike. Even though the storm was still 150 miles away, the cameras showed how the water was already up to the floor of the deck and the walkway out was ripped up and the building was leaning...wow...
I have been visiting with friends in that area all day: Joanne and Jimmy will ride it out, 10 miles from Galveston, as they have a nursery...Ricky says he is "prepared" down in Houston...others are on the way north, getting out of harms way.

USA Flag Shapes Tee Shirt

"USA Flag Shapes Tee Shirt"____S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL____$18 includes shipping and Tax in Texas
e-mail me if you want one vvaughan8@yahoo.com
or click the "Buy Now" button below ...
Before I was a painter, I was a tee shirt designer. I probably have over 1,000 designs to my credit, and this one was done almost exactly 7 years ago. In Texas we have long said "Remember the Alamo"...it is a phrase that reminds us of the great home we have....a place woth defending. On this day, may we ALWAYTS remember how precious our freedoms are, and that there are people who hate us for them. America is worth defending and being proud of. All this political stuff is GOOD, because we are free to choose HOW we want to proceed in freedom...(and if we don't like the outcome, we can throw the rascalls out in 4 years!)...God Bless America is not just a phrase ...to me it is a prayer.

Little Steer

"Little Steer"______3.5 x 3.5 _____Little original oil painting with easel, $100 for the first to ask!
You guessed it! I am a Texas Longhorn fan...oddly enough, I like Aggies, too, since I am surrounded by them in Round Rock, TX. (I notice that the older I get, the less stress I feel watching the football rivalries!...I used to be pretty intense about it...I have a newspaper clipping of me in the crowd at a baseball game 30 years ago and I am leading the crowd in a big taunting gesture aimed at the other team! haha! No more of THAT!!!)
I am probably more of a Longhorn fan since I like to paint our great Texas cattle and don't really know what an "Aggie" looks like! If someone wants to tell me what an oil painting of an Aggie should look like, I will try one!!! This will be a fun one to comment on!!! (welcome to my BLOG, James!)

Day Suspended

"Day Suspended" from "Summer Day Last Year on the Farm"___6 x 8 framed with LOTS of goodies included...

I flew to Alabama tonight. Really didn't think I'd be here since I was WAY DOWN on the list flying stand by, but somehow I made it...I am here to bring the exhibit of 365 paintings of "Last Year on the Farm" back to Texas! It has been a great run at the Gadsdem Museum of Art. They have a great thing going here in this beautiful community!

MANY of you have been following the adventure, and have even put your name on a farm painting or two! Well, NOW IS THE TIME that we will start to send the paintings to their permanent homes. I regard each painting as part of a dandelion....I am taking it and getting ready to blow on the little floating seeds an watch them fly away and take root elsewhere...Along the way I have been gathering all the magazine articles, newspaper headlines, stories and videos that were shared about "Last Year on the farm"...I have made HUNDREDS of new friends who I will FOREVER be linked with by this art...There is more to tell, but for now, T H A N K Y'ALL!!!!!

Mom's Hair Day

"Mom's Hair Day"___from my sketchbook
I am the youngest of 7 kids, so my mom is getting up there in years. A couple weeks ago it became clear that she needed a little more help during her day, so she decided to live in an assisted living place for a while. These things are so hard on so many levels and for each family member involved. My mom is a joyful person who always has a smile and a laugh for everyone...and you'd better be smiling and laughing back at her or you'll hear about it!
hahaha "Our Thing" is her Tuesday hair day with Judy...and a Taco Bell taco afterwards.
Well, yesterday we didn't get the taco (mom did not want to miss her afternoon workout...what? ...she never worked out before!!!!....I sketched this looking at mom's reflection while Judy twirled her in the chair, building the bee-hive...

"Little Hereford___3.5 x 3.5 oil on canvas with small easel_____Click to bid!
Here is a juicy little oil painting that comes with its own little easel. I found them at Jerry's Artarama last year and today it was fun to just grab a tiny canvas again...for fun...It is one you'd want to put on a shelf in a small space, maybe ...I have been off the farm for nearly a year now, and find myself missing it more and more. When that happens, I have to paint it.
I am going to re-order the Last Year on the Farm books this week. Let me know if you want one and I will autograph it for you.
