“Last Year on the Farm May 2002-Red Baler” v….vaughan

The painting above is one of my first plein air works. A “quick sketch” I did before I started our “Last Year on the Farm”.
For the next 2 weeks I will be in Arizona: painting, showing, teaching and demo-ing…aka demonstrating. If you are anywhere near Prescott, Phoenix, Sedona or the Bisbee area, please let me know!
During this time I will be posting paintings from the Last Year on the Farm…three times I have painted the farm 24 times in 24 hours: I did these marathons in the Fall, Winter and Spring.(I will do another one soon)… I never posted all of those, so I will be playing “catch up” for the next 2 weeks.
I will wait till I get back to post the AZ works.

The pastures have had plenty of rain and they are all being cut for hay this week. The last little herd of cows is having their fill of fresh grass below the pecan trees...

The First Bale

"Last Year...First Bale May 19 2007"

It was hazy when I began to paint this and I didn't know what the dark "blob" was ...after 20 minutes and eye adjustments, I realized that the hay was being baled and this was the first one!. I love hay time here on the farm...the air smells different, the dogs like to walk the rows...it was Sandy's favorite past time :)

Sweet Sandy Died Yesterday

Last Year on the Farm 05 - 18-2007 v....vaughan

I painted this with a very heavy heart. Our beloved dog, Sandy died in the early morning hours. He was laying in the yard in his usual place , lifeless, this morning.Just yesterday I photographed him as he greeted me on the road after taking my son to school. He had slowed down a lot this year, but his favorite thing to do was to roam the hay fields. We just did that yesterday...Sandy came to us as a stray and was always a mellow, easy going pal...I will paint him tomorrow ...

Serenade

I am being serenaded by a mocking bird perched on my antenna above my studio deck. She or he is doing a great "cardinal", and every few moments he makes a feeble attempt at "hawk"....I will miss painting the first cuttings of hay next year. See it in the distance in this little painting.

Yard Ponies

Last Year on the Farm 05-12-2007 v….vaughan
I had to paint this from memory…a fun exercise! These were a few mother’s day visitors who spent the night in our front yard…My sons were very amused because alltheir life we have had fences separating our yard from the pasture. Since the cows left the fences have been taken down. Not only that, but there are NEVER horses in this pasture...it was weird for them, to be here, too..they were really uneasy and seemed to be more comforted hanging around our house and cars...

Good Hay Year

"Good Hay Year...2005"
A few years ago I did not know we'd be moving off the farm in 2007. I painted this at "hay time" in May that year. Nancy and Bobby are getting ready to cut hay right now, and it looks like it will be a good year, like 2005 was...My painting style has developed a little since this one, so it will be fun to note the difference if I can paint a similar one in a few days :)

I don't paint this view often, preferring instead to look toward the open fields on the farm, rather than the nearby neighborhood. But, this was a soft, spectacular sunset ..provided by THE AUTHOR of sunsets...how wonderful to copy His wonders :)

About the Farm Paintings…Though I am not pushing sales on these, a number of collectors want me to contact them when a particular painting is available…so I have a queue started for people who want “first dibs” .…please let me know if you see one you like.

Hey Pitcher

"Pitcher".....V....Vaughan Sketch

This is my son, Samuel, a long, lean athlete who would rather play and compete than anything...He was pitching "nasty" last night...that's a good thing in baseball lingo :) I was able to sketch him on the mound...little by little...using pen so that I don't fuss with the sketch too much...

School "Year-end" activities rule the day, so I have postponed my Rockport workshop untill later this month... see upcoming events below!

If you are going t Fredericksburg, TX for the OPA events, please stop by Snowfire gallery to see this big new one I am delivering today...it's a view of our farm as the sun goes down and the shadows get long and the storm passes...with the egrets passing by looking to bed down for the evening....I call it "Passing", and it is one of my bigger works .....

This was a "love bite" to be sure. The cows are gone from our farm, but there are still plenty of horses....I sold this little sketch in Maryland a couple years ago, but it has been a"reference" for other works

Fallbrook Knob

I know, I know..."KNOB" is a Texas word and this is a California subject, but I forgot the name of this location where we painted on Saturday morning. If any of my new friends in Fallbrook would PLEASE help me out, just click on "comment" and we can properly name this little mountain. The Fallbrook area of CA is surrounded and built on little mountains like this, all covered with avocado farms, tall cypress, eucalyptis and beautiful homes. (Someone help me spell "yoo-cuh-lip-tiss" please....is it eucalyptus??

It's good to be back home on our farm...ready to finish up our "Last Year..." ...watch for new works as spring is turning to summer ;)

Sunward___a new reproduction

"Sunward" .....24 x 24 big ... Ltd. Ed. Giclee $200

I do not often do reproductions of my work, but had a few requests for this one. So "Sunward" is my latest Limited Edition Giclee on canvas...only 8 are available in this very limited edition of 10. A giclee is a digital print, that is finer because the dot pattern cannot be seen at all, so it looks very close to the original art. Farmmoonrise

I saw the moon rise over the California mountains last night. It reminded me of our farm moonrises...This painting was done about 3 years ago, when I didn't know we'd be moving (so it is sold), but it was painted at about this time of year...April or May.
