ITINERARY: DRAFT

WORKSHOP LOCATIONS will all be on or near the Conejos River, between Rocky Mountain Lodge and Antonito. This is a 30 mile span, but we will only go to one general area a day, and not do a lot of driving once we get there.
Three FULL DAYS will be divided into two sessions. Two half day sessions on the first and last days. Our sessions will include Artist Demonstrations by V….Vaughan, some hand-outs, brief discussion and theory instruction while V…. paints. An entire session or two will be devoted to SKETCHING: working either on canvas or in sketchbooks. Perspective Problems will be tackled! Capturing impressions QUICKLY… drawing without lines…I have a LOT to say about sketching!!!
The locations have wonderful variety. Things you will choose from: Mountain Vistas, River Color, Warm GREENS,
Big Monsoon Skies, Sage Brush Meadows, Dark GREENS, Old Churches, Crumbled Adobe, Barns, Dude Ranch Corrals, Light GREENS, Cattle, Calves, Horses and Foals,  Cowboys and Cowgirls, and Cool GREENS.
A SPECIAL TOPIC I ALWAYS COVER IS HOW WE SEE LIGHT, and WHAT IS COLOR, ANYWAY? We learn a lot about these by intense observation at the extreme ends of the day: SUNRISE and SUNSET. I have planned this class to coincide with the FULL MOON, so we will also observe and paint MOONRISE AND MOONSET, which will happen at the same time as the sunrise/sunset! It is a FASCINATING study and is sure to cause a leap forward in your painting progress, if you have never studied such things…I HAVE FUN WITH IT, TOO! Having taught high school artists for over 20 years, I know how to keep it simple, so that you can do what you like to do most….PAINT!!!
Here is a ROUGH DRAFT of our workshop…You will receive a detailed itinerary when we meet on Tuesday. There will be maps and phone numbers and other details… OUR EXACT LOCATIONS WILL BE GIVEN WHEN YOU REGISTER!

Night Textures

Night Textures_8x10 oil on canvas___$450
We were here for the full moon, and I have been painting every day to present new works for the second annual Conejos Fire House Art Show. I'll be joining the best artists who live in this community, and some are internationally known and collected! We are expecting a nice turnout, but this is still a very "secret" little gem of a show! A community down the road, with BIG homes and full-time residents has jumped on board with the artists and is hosting an Art Walk on July 28...so if you miss this one, come see my Colorado wet paint at the Bear Creek Art Walk...there will be another full moon that week, so I am reserving time to paint it!...ALSO, I have finalized some accommodations for next year's canyon workshop. YOU TOO can paint here with me in 2013! I just need to set a date in July or August...if you want to "suggest" a week, I would love t have your input if you think you can come!!! Thinking late July-early August!!
Here are some locations for a few of my workshops. email me if you want more info on any of these...
And here is a link to a SPECIAL ONE.
I can't wait to see the water go down the drain BACKWARDS there!
July-August ___weekly__Austin___ "Chocolates and Chiaroscuro"
Sept. 15, 2012___Salado TX
2013___New York City, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania...

Good Morning, Anyway

Good Morning, Anyway___6x6 oil on canvas panel___SOLD
I jumped out of my car and stood in the path, premixing these colors while waiting for the gang to show up for our morning session.  I stayed close to the parking lot, since it was dark...about 30 minutes before sunrise and the moon was just fading...these colors are important to capture quickly. The cars were pulling in, and I didn't look up when I heard the footsteps...thinking it was one of "us" I said "good morning", in a cheery morning voice! (yes, I know, not everyone appreciates an annoyingly cheery "morning-person", so I poured it on thick to be even MORE anoying! hahaha all in fun!)...well the footsteps were from a man who had come to fish, and he was especially GRUMPY...didn't say a word, but glared at me very well! It turns out that Valerie had just said a cheery hello to him and he didn't like that, either!...well, we all ruined his fishing as we set up next to him (not seeing him nearby...the park is big enough...so he stomped off...ignoring our sincere apologies....). Right away another man came to fish and promptly caught TWO GIANT fish!!!...Mr. Grumpy missed his chance, but we enjoyed a good morning anyway....despite the snake incident, which I will share tomorrow...

Moonlift

Moonlift___8x6 oil study on linen panel___$190
Yesterday's painting is literally the "other side" of this one. I painted it facing west as the sun went down, and called it "Sunslide" for a special reason. Immediately after painting it, I turned to the east to paint the full moon rising. But because of the cloud cover, we never really saw the moon, but could see the "lift" of moonlight from behind the clouds. So that explains the title of this one....Both were "lessons" or demos painted during my last workshop in Texas. We had been hoping for some interesting skies and were mostly given CLEAR BLUE skies...until this one evening.

Moonset West of Rugby, ND

Moonset West of Rugby, ND__6x8 oil on linen panel___for Passing America: the Great Plains
This leg of my journey across the plains doing "drive-by" paintings, was chosen so that I could find some SERIOUS WINTER. ...and wanting to find snow, but not endanger my driver! I chose well! Minnesota to Montana in mid-January is a guaranty for snowy landscapes. A few weeks ago, it had been -30 in these parts, so I was blessed to have much milder weather. It was 7 in this part of North Dakota this day!
I also chose this PARTICULAR winter day because of the moon phase and the Amtrak schedule. Whether traveling east to west or west to east, the MN to MT Empire Builder route travels half the time in the dark. My mission is to paint on the move, so I need LIGHT to see. I chose a day when the moon would be full, and I would have opportunity to see reflected light off the snow....After a night spent sketching put the window from my bed in the sleeper car, with my buddy, Rhonda on the top bunk, we were gifted with a beautiful and brief moonset peaking through the clouds.
We passed many little farms at night. I viewed them all night long....sometimes the train would stop near their towns, other times we would pass on by...more about that tomorrow
***Oh, yes!!! About that moonset from the train! All night long I monitored the full moon. I sketched it's reflection on ponds (...I THINK they were ponds!), noted the deep shadows on the snow, and watched it track across the sky....THEN I LOST IT!!!...at about 6 am I noticed it was "gone", and I did not think it was due to clouds, but rather the direction we traveled! The train veered a little bit and I assumed the moon was right in front of us... Thinking I wouldn't see it again, I settled in to do other things when Rhonda came runing through the train, leaving her breakfast, to tell me she spotted it going down! THAT IS WHY I was able to paint this one!!! THANK YOU, RHONDA!!! (And hey....running down a narrow aisle of a moving train ain't easy!)

Moonset Morning

Moonset Morning__8x6 oil on linen panel__available next week at Wind Rush Gallery, Sedona, AZ
Last week we had a full moon! I was out with some friends and we saw the moonset through the clouds. I grabbed a small canvas and "took notes"....the fall colors were just about at their peak in South Texas. I know that might be hard to believe for you folks who live up where Winter is :)

Last Full Moon_farm, moon, moonrise, harvest

"Last Full Moon, Last Year on the Farm 10-26-2007"_____________sold
It seems longer ago than just two years when I painted for the last time on our farm...oh, I went back for a "last day", but this was the day before I left and locked the door behind me....my kids later went back and broke into the house with a photographer friend and took pictures which they gave me for Mother's Day...that's another story...especially when they got caught.
I remember this painting so well, because by this time all the furniture was gone and no one was there but me. The night was quiet and I could HEAR every brushstroke. It was a hard, hard time, and I get a lump in my throat just typing this. Please 'feel sorry for me, though. I am one who NEEDS the reflective moments and the sad moments in order to REALLY feel blessed. Hard to explain, but I must confront the hard times head on, and understand them fully before I can accept them. Because of this I was the last one to leave the farm. Sometimes I admire folks who can turn a page quickly and get on with life...speaking of turning pages, I have a link below to my little book "Last Year on the Farm: A Story of Change". Click on the book cover and it turns pages so you can see the first 10 pages or so. You can order the book from this link, too.

Nestled in Gold__moonrise, mesa, night lights, New Mexico, Colorado

"Nestled in Gold" 11 x 14 oil on linen___available at Act I Gallery, Taos, NM
This is MY FAVORITE painting from last week in the mountains. Our place is so closed in to a canyon, that it takes the moon a couple of hours to rise above the mountain tops. So, since I knew there's be a full moon, I dragged my buddies out for a little drive. As soon as we rounded a bend away from the low mesas at the mouth of our canyon, THIS SCENE presented itself... We quickly found a place to pull off and I got my gear out in a hurry. I hate wrangling a lot of equipment, and never even took out my easel for this one. I just held the canvas in my hand and threw my palette on the ground and hunkered behind a tire to block the wind...I got all the major colors and shapes down in a hurry and painted till I couldn't tell white from yellow (that's how I know it's too dark to paint :) If you can come to a workshop, I will show you how!

New Rain, New Moon_12 x 12 oil on gallery wrap

New Rain, New Moon___12 x 12 oil on gallery wrap canvas__AVAILABLE at Bienvenidos! a multimedia art exhibit next week. Please scroll to bottom to see your invitation!

You might remember my study for this one, painted a few weeks ago. click the link to see it and compare the study to the new painting. The new one is much bigger at 12 x 12. The gallery wrap canvas is one with thick sides which are painted. It can be hung on the wall without a frame, for a more conemporary look. I prepared the new one for the show mentioned above. Please come if you can...there is some fabulous work by great artists in ALL MEDIA. See the art used on the invitation for a sampling of some typical art at this show. http://vvaughan.blogspot.com/search?q=bienvenido+rain
Tomorrow I will be painting a demo in Brownwood, TX for their art league. It has been a few weeks since I did a demo or taught, so I am REALLY EXCITED! My plan has been to paint a larger work of a great Texas sky...but if I feel inspired differently tomorrow, I could paint ANYTHING!...See you there!

Luz de Espada_16 x 20__old, so it's SOLD

"Luz de Espada"____16 x 20 oil on linen...painted in 2005 0r 2006, so it's long gone...
All my little mission studies this week stirred up conversation with blogger fans of the San Antonio Missions. One friend said her favorite mission is Espada. It is one of the two at the south end of the Mission Trail and sometimes gets overlooked, because most visitors start at the north. I painted Espada a few years ago, so I dug up this photo to share. This was a larger work, 16 x 20 but was derived from a study like the ones I posted last week.

Bienvenido Rain_study_6x8 oil

"Bienvenido Rain"_study_6x8 oil on linen____$150 after I'm done with it, next week!
I am preparing a couple of paintings for a show coming up here in Austin. The theme of this show is "Bienvenidos", which means WELCOME in spanish. Here is a study...a painting from the other night when some rain came REAL close to us at sunset. I was on my way to the little drugstore for some Advil and Icy Hot for Mr. Football Player and this BRILLIANT sky loomed over the nearby ranch....The poor, sore football player had to wait a few extra moments, because lucky mama had her camera....I used the pics as reference and painted this welcome sight as soon as I got home....I will post the final painting next week...
*NOTE to artists...photos are fine, really, but use them RIGHT AWAY, before the impression of the REAL light fades from memory. As I occasionally judge art shows, I can TEL when someone only works from photos...it is a very obvious distinction..use your God-given appreciation for REAL LIFE LIGHT in your paintings. If you struggle with this, do more little studies outside....I DO!
