ITINERARY: DRAFT

WORKSHOP LOCATIONS will all be on or near the Conejos River, between Rocky Mountain Lodge and Antonito. This is a 30 mile span, but we will only go to one general area a day, and not do a lot of driving once we get there.
Three FULL DAYS will be divided into two sessions. Two half day sessions on the first and last days. Our sessions will include Artist Demonstrations by V….Vaughan, some hand-outs, brief discussion and theory instruction while V…. paints. An entire session or two will be devoted to SKETCHING: working either on canvas or in sketchbooks. Perspective Problems will be tackled! Capturing impressions QUICKLY… drawing without lines…I have a LOT to say about sketching!!!
The locations have wonderful variety. Things you will choose from: Mountain Vistas, River Color, Warm GREENS,
Big Monsoon Skies, Sage Brush Meadows, Dark GREENS, Old Churches, Crumbled Adobe, Barns, Dude Ranch Corrals, Light GREENS, Cattle, Calves, Horses and Foals,  Cowboys and Cowgirls, and Cool GREENS.
A SPECIAL TOPIC I ALWAYS COVER IS HOW WE SEE LIGHT, and WHAT IS COLOR, ANYWAY? We learn a lot about these by intense observation at the extreme ends of the day: SUNRISE and SUNSET. I have planned this class to coincide with the FULL MOON, so we will also observe and paint MOONRISE AND MOONSET, which will happen at the same time as the sunrise/sunset! It is a FASCINATING study and is sure to cause a leap forward in your painting progress, if you have never studied such things…I HAVE FUN WITH IT, TOO! Having taught high school artists for over 20 years, I know how to keep it simple, so that you can do what you like to do most….PAINT!!!
Here is a ROUGH DRAFT of our workshop…You will receive a detailed itinerary when we meet on Tuesday. There will be maps and phone numbers and other details… OUR EXACT LOCATIONS WILL BE GIVEN WHEN YOU REGISTER!

Dusky Docks - 40 x 30

Dusky Docks___40 x 30 BIG oil on Gallery wrap
Available at Rockport Art Festival, July 6-7, Rockport, TX
or available from ME!

A few months ago I did the study for this one, which sold in Charleston...since it sold, I have been chomping at the bit to do a large version....
I love SUMMER and the humid coastal areas this time of year. Yes, I LOVE the humidity and even the SMELL of the coast and boatyards!...so much so that RIGHT NOW, I am headed to New Orleans to gather more "steamy reference"...My sister is tagging along, and we will catch up to my artist friend, Robin Cheers, who is there right now, hanging out in all the cafes, and eating her way through the restaurants and urban areas, sketching and texting me to "hurry up" and get there....We are hoping to do some sort of collaboration on the theme, so I can't wait to see what she has done!...
Actually, the plan is to work separately while there, and then get our stuff together afterwards to see what each of us did! (but since she and her family got there first, they are keeping in touch, to make sure I don't miss something I NEED to see!...or eat!!!)
I'll be looking for a boatyard or a farm!...and a beignet

Stormy Thumb

Stormy Thumb___16x20 "Quick Draw" in oil
Yesterday's post showed my first "quick draw" at the Phippen Museum Western Art Show out in Prescott, AZ. Here is the one I did on Sunday last week. It also took one hour and was auctioned off along with 18 other artist's works. The scene is Thumb Butte, with the lights of Prescott twinkling.
I worked from a reference photo I took the day before, when I took a wrong turn on the way to the event, and saw a spectacular view from the hill top!
The painting is larger than my usual quick draw canvas....see ?

I AM HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE that my works are now represented in Sedona, Arizona at the wonderful

Platt Turkey Crossing

Platte Turkey Crossing___a study for ranch commission
Last year I painted out several times along the great Platte River in Nebraska. The study above was from last summer...a cool morning with a blazing sunrise!
While standing on the bank looking into the sun, a gang of turkeys on my side of the river decided to cross right there in front of me. this is a small work painted with a big brush, so the turkeys are way too big for the size of this river. I can't wait to re-create this in the proper scale.
This study and a number of pictures I took will help me create a larger painting that I hope will convey the magnificence of this place.
I find that, as I work on my Birdseed Project, I put birds in all my paintings. Call this my "bird phase".

Bay Day

Bay Day___6x12 oil on panel__Rockport Art Festival, July 5, 2013
I started this plein air oil the last time I was down in Rockport, TX. A few days ago I uncovered it, unfinished in my studio and could see enough info that it was easy to finish. I will set it aside for the Rockport Art Festival, in early July, unless someone wants it BEFORE then!
As I type this, I am surrounded by winter's last grip on the Great Plains! So STAY TUNED for some winter paintings, which will be a real exercise for this Texas girl! I figure it will be EASY!! I brought a big tube of WHITE...
I am in Nebraska to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art! My exhibit, Last Year on the Farm was their first EVER exhibit, and that's when I became friends with the museum! I come up here EVERY CHANCE I can, and get my fill of agrarian (FARM) life, which surrounds this area of Nebraska....FRIDAY thru Sunday I will be LEARNING from painters Michael Albrectsen and Michael Bingham, both from Utah (AMAZING ARTISTS). If you are nearby PLEASE try to come to ONE EVENT here in David City, NE. I can PROBABLY get you into the workshop, even at the last minute   vvaughan8@yahoo.com
OR, come meet everyone at the opening reception for the current exhibition "The Barn as a Chapel", presented by artist Michael Wilson. Saturday, April 13, 6-8 pm...you can meet me and ALL the
Michaels, and tour this little GEM of a museum....

Twilight Transit

Twilight Transit__16x20__available at Act I Gallery, Taos, NM

Boy do I have a lot of art to share!  ...and other stuff of life!
Where to begin??
For now, I will share some art, and hope you enjoy!
A few weeks ago I did this painting as a demo for some great artists of the
Below is the start of the demo...above is the finish. If you were there, tell  me what you think!
Since it a twilight scene, I am sending it to Act I Gallery inTaos, for the winter exhibit called "Twilight".
Since this photo, I have added the "morning star", Venus, as it looked a few months ago during the rare Venus Transit. So that explains the title!
Tomorrow's post begins a little series I have begun. It is special to my heart, and will benefit some lovely elderly people I know! Please check in tomorrow!
Merry CHRISTmas, Joey!!

Invisible Clearly Seen

Invisible Clearly Seen___30x24 oil on linen___Contact V.... for info
I am a member of a group of artists who exhibit 4 times a year at a church in Austin, TX. This group is VERY DIVERSE, with artworks that explore many different media and methods, including sculpture, metalwork, glass and mosaics. Each exhibit has a theme, and the artists create works based on the theme. We write an interpretation of our work in accordance with the theme. Here is my interpretation of my new painting above:
"God's created handiwork reveals His very character. When we seek to understand Him, He often uses His natural world to "explain" and answer some complex questions. Sunrise happens every morning, and it is often a visual rhapsody displaying His glory! We see LIGHT swallowing darkness, reminding us that God IS LIGHT. Light reflects off of other created things: the moon, fog, clouds: These only reflect and do not generate light or color or warmth."
Come to the reception Friday, if you are nearby!
The Prayer and Creativity Team (PACT) Presents "Visual Rhapsody" a multi media art exhibit at "Open Doors" Gallery at Hill Country Bible Church Northwest Campus in the Worship Center Balcony (Building A- 3rd Floor).
The opening reception will be Friday, September 21 from 7-9 pm
  • Free admission
  • Excellent, original artwork with a Christian perspective.
  • Live music and delicious desserts served.

San Pedro y San Rafael y Sangres

San Pedro y San Rafael y Sangres___8x10 oil study on panel___$350
Yesterday was a full  moon day (Yes, I painted the moonrise, too! I will post that tomorrow)
We ventured from our place in the mountains, out into the San Luis Valley to see the sunrise over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Sangre de Cristo means "blood of Christ" in Espanol.
There is something solemn about that name and this location, settled by faithful people who built this little church...My Colorado workshop is in the planning stages, and This will certainly be one of the places we will paint!
Here are locations for a few of my workshops. email me if you want more info on any of these...

Second Light

Second Light___6x6 oil study___$150 (see side by side with yesterday's FIRST light)
This was painted IMMEDIATELY after the Red Rubber Ball I posted yesterday. These were a workshop lesson on Capturing Impressions Quickly...I demonstrated on a small scale, so that I could work even faster! The main lesson here was the RADIANT nature of both light and shadow...if you took the workshop, did you remember that???...I cannot wait to develop these lessons further in upcoming workshops!...

Here are some locations for a few of my workshops. email me if you want more info on any of these...

Red Rubber Ball

Red Rubber Ball___6x6 oil study___$150
Our summer mornings are bright, cool and colorful this time of year. When the sun just breaks, it reminds me of the lyrics to an old song! Here is one sunrise from last week's workshop at Brushy Creek Lake. Colors change FAST at sunrise, a real challenge for the artist, but one trick is to learn to see them all at once, rather than just one at a time!
Upcoming workshops are listed below.... email me if you want more info on any of these...

How 106 Begins

How 106 Begins___8x10 oil on canvas___available at Cactus Jack's, Gruene, TX
I went out EARLY, yesterday, and painted the start of a HOT day with a couple of friends....When I was painting my "Last Year on the Farm", I painted the ends of the day often, because my children were younger and very busy, and the early or late times were when we were home! Because of that, I learned to grab color fast and to identify the things that will change first...these are things I LOVE to share at my workshops.
Some locations for my upcoming workshops are below. email me if you want more info on any of these...
