ITINERARY: DRAFT

WORKSHOP LOCATIONS will all be on or near the Conejos River, between Rocky Mountain Lodge and Antonito. This is a 30 mile span, but we will only go to one general area a day, and not do a lot of driving once we get there.
Three FULL DAYS will be divided into two sessions. Two half day sessions on the first and last days. Our sessions will include Artist Demonstrations by V….Vaughan, some hand-outs, brief discussion and theory instruction while V…. paints. An entire session or two will be devoted to SKETCHING: working either on canvas or in sketchbooks. Perspective Problems will be tackled! Capturing impressions QUICKLY… drawing without lines…I have a LOT to say about sketching!!!
The locations have wonderful variety. Things you will choose from: Mountain Vistas, River Color, Warm GREENS,
Big Monsoon Skies, Sage Brush Meadows, Dark GREENS, Old Churches, Crumbled Adobe, Barns, Dude Ranch Corrals, Light GREENS, Cattle, Calves, Horses and Foals,  Cowboys and Cowgirls, and Cool GREENS.
A SPECIAL TOPIC I ALWAYS COVER IS HOW WE SEE LIGHT, and WHAT IS COLOR, ANYWAY? We learn a lot about these by intense observation at the extreme ends of the day: SUNRISE and SUNSET. I have planned this class to coincide with the FULL MOON, so we will also observe and paint MOONRISE AND MOONSET, which will happen at the same time as the sunrise/sunset! It is a FASCINATING study and is sure to cause a leap forward in your painting progress, if you have never studied such things…I HAVE FUN WITH IT, TOO! Having taught high school artists for over 20 years, I know how to keep it simple, so that you can do what you like to do most….PAINT!!!
Here is a ROUGH DRAFT of our workshop…You will receive a detailed itinerary when we meet on Tuesday. There will be maps and phone numbers and other details… OUR EXACT LOCATIONS WILL BE GIVEN WHEN YOU REGISTER!

Life on the Lake

Life on the Lake__10 x 12 oil on linen panel___sold
I wish this was MY lake, but it's a special place for my cousin, Jeff and his wife, Tricia... Here is what Tricia says about the place!
"This is my aunt and uncles cabin in Emily, Minnesota on Rogers Lake..... we always have a blast when we're there. My aunt and uncle call it "The Sweet Spot" It's a small, quiet, clean lake with a lot of wildlife. One of my favorite things to do is sit on the dock and watch the eagle and her babies that have a nest real near by. Jeff actually rests while we're up there too, which he's not very good at doing at home."

To Lincoln_clouds, summer,plains

To Lincoln__6x8 oil on panel__study for Passing America Exhibit in 2011
Now might be a good time to look back at my blog and scroll upward from August 1 or so...For the past few weeks I have posted works from summer travels, mainly my Colorado sketchbook and Nebraska "Drive-by" paintings....the one above is another from the Nebraska group....It was late afternoon, after a whole day of tromping around Butler County with my friend/driver, Allen. This one was painted with his wife Anna in the back seat, and on the way to an art show reception at the Great Plains Art Museum in Lincoln, NE. Some work from their permanent collection was there (The Curator's Choice Exhibit), and a painting of mine was on display. As we drove to Lincoln, the sky was building to a crescendo as thunderheads popped up all around...it looked like the day would end as it had begun! Tomorrow I will post the last one from this trip!
AND THEN THE SKETCHBOOK AUCTION BEGINS!!! ...I'll explain tomorrow.

San Juans in Green

San Juans in Green___6x8 oil study on linen panel____$150
I worked in the sketchbook again, today, but took a break to play with color. It's that time of year when the clouds build up on the mountain tops every day for an afternoon shower. So the best painting time is in the morning till about 2 pm....then it's time to read or nap or play games like my family likes to do. Just before the rains, my friend, Pat and I painted on the hillside near our cabins....ALL THOSE GREENS!!!
Tomorrow I will post more from the sketchbook!

Summer Shade

Summer Shade___6x8 oil on linen___$150 workshop demo
ItalicI am teaching this week in Fredericksburg...Today featured a typical summer day in Texas...bright warm sunshine (OK..."hot" sunshine), plenty of those puffy clouds delivering shade across the landscape and the constant sound of cicadas. This was my afternoon demo for the group, and all we had to do was step onto the porch to see it. The views are beautiful, here...I spoke on drawing this morning, handed out some "goodies", fielded lots of thoughtful, smart questions and we even enjoyed some of Fredericksburg's famous tree-ripened peaches...best crop in years! ...it's a good, small group of 8, and several came from out of state. (Leigh, from Illinois said our cicadas sound different from her cicadas...) I am loving this!

August 28 on the Farm___

"August 28, 2006__Last Year on the Farm"__giclee available soon
This painting was one of my most requested ones of my "Last Year on the Farm". It sold FAST! I painted it THREE YEARS ago, today. I saw a similar scene at a nearby farm, today and it remined me that I promised myself (and a few collectors!) that I will soon paint a large version of this small study. I have the canvas ready, and a frame to put it in! The large original

will be 24 x 30 (or maybe 30 x 40...I can't decide!)...but, I also want to print a small edition of canvas giclees....My "farm work" remains my BEST work, I think. I published a small book with LOTS of pictures of the paintings. Order info is below...
A thought for my artist friends: Use your good studies as reference for larger works....this is what they are for! So many of the little "daily paintings" I do end up being re-created as larger works. Half the fun is trying to re-capture the freshness and brushwork of the study....the other half of the fun is selling the little study!

"Last Year on the Farm : A Story of Change..." THE BOOK IS HERE!

$29 plus 5 to ship. Total : $34

This exhibit of 365 small plein air paintings toured the country on exhibit in 2008. All of the paintings are up on my web site, and many are available for purchase NOW!

I put together a 50 page book, measuring 7" x 7", which is just FULL of some of my favorite images from my "Last Year on the Farm". There are two paintings for each month and a section showing two complete groups of "24 paintings in 24 hours" : "Fall Day...." and "Winter Day....". The book is available in paperback or Hard boound and includes a few of my thoughts and a short story about the project.

It is a WONDERFUL story of the end of a way of life in America. It's a story that touches MOST Americans as we say goodbye to small time farming.
