ITINERARY: DRAFT

WORKSHOP LOCATIONS will all be on or near the Conejos River, between Rocky Mountain Lodge and Antonito. This is a 30 mile span, but we will only go to one general area a day, and not do a lot of driving once we get there.
Three FULL DAYS will be divided into two sessions. Two half day sessions on the first and last days. Our sessions will include Artist Demonstrations by V….Vaughan, some hand-outs, brief discussion and theory instruction while V…. paints. An entire session or two will be devoted to SKETCHING: working either on canvas or in sketchbooks. Perspective Problems will be tackled! Capturing impressions QUICKLY… drawing without lines…I have a LOT to say about sketching!!!
The locations have wonderful variety. Things you will choose from: Mountain Vistas, River Color, Warm GREENS,
Big Monsoon Skies, Sage Brush Meadows, Dark GREENS, Old Churches, Crumbled Adobe, Barns, Dude Ranch Corrals, Light GREENS, Cattle, Calves, Horses and Foals,  Cowboys and Cowgirls, and Cool GREENS.
A SPECIAL TOPIC I ALWAYS COVER IS HOW WE SEE LIGHT, and WHAT IS COLOR, ANYWAY? We learn a lot about these by intense observation at the extreme ends of the day: SUNRISE and SUNSET. I have planned this class to coincide with the FULL MOON, so we will also observe and paint MOONRISE AND MOONSET, which will happen at the same time as the sunrise/sunset! It is a FASCINATING study and is sure to cause a leap forward in your painting progress, if you have never studied such things…I HAVE FUN WITH IT, TOO! Having taught high school artists for over 20 years, I know how to keep it simple, so that you can do what you like to do most….PAINT!!!
Here is a ROUGH DRAFT of our workshop…You will receive a detailed itinerary when we meet on Tuesday. There will be maps and phone numbers and other details… OUR EXACT LOCATIONS WILL BE GIVEN WHEN YOU REGISTER!

Good Morning, Anyway

Good Morning, Anyway___6x6 oil on canvas panel___SOLD
I jumped out of my car and stood in the path, premixing these colors while waiting for the gang to show up for our morning session.  I stayed close to the parking lot, since it was dark...about 30 minutes before sunrise and the moon was just fading...these colors are important to capture quickly. The cars were pulling in, and I didn't look up when I heard the footsteps...thinking it was one of "us" I said "good morning", in a cheery morning voice! (yes, I know, not everyone appreciates an annoyingly cheery "morning-person", so I poured it on thick to be even MORE anoying! hahaha all in fun!)...well the footsteps were from a man who had come to fish, and he was especially GRUMPY...didn't say a word, but glared at me very well! It turns out that Valerie had just said a cheery hello to him and he didn't like that, either!...well, we all ruined his fishing as we set up next to him (not seeing him nearby...the park is big enough...so he stomped off...ignoring our sincere apologies....). Right away another man came to fish and promptly caught TWO GIANT fish!!!...Mr. Grumpy missed his chance, but we enjoyed a good morning anyway....despite the snake incident, which I will share tomorrow...

Moonlift

Moonlift___8x6 oil study on linen panel___$190
Yesterday's painting is literally the "other side" of this one. I painted it facing west as the sun went down, and called it "Sunslide" for a special reason. Immediately after painting it, I turned to the east to paint the full moon rising. But because of the cloud cover, we never really saw the moon, but could see the "lift" of moonlight from behind the clouds. So that explains the title of this one....Both were "lessons" or demos painted during my last workshop in Texas. We had been hoping for some interesting skies and were mostly given CLEAR BLUE skies...until this one evening.

Supermoon

Supermoon__6x8 oil on linen panel__for Passing America: The Great Plains

"Supermoon" is when the orbit of the moon makes it pass the closest it can to Earth. This means it looks bigger, brighter and BETTER than usual!...I guess.... While this special full moon was rising, the car was very dark, so I was only able to sketch a scene and put down a few color notes....then I "memorized" the relationships of color, studied the forms as they passed by, and completed this from memory...

Our family drove to College Station for my mother-in-law's birthday, yesterday. I brought along my gear to do some "drive-by" paintings. This WILL be part of my exhibit called Passing America: The Great Plains. The exhibit opens on Oct 7, late this year, and runs through December in Lincoln, NE at the Great Plains Art Museum at the University f Nebraska.
I am VERY excited to be in the "home stretch" of this wonderful project and study. I will now be working FULL TIME on the paintings, to complete over 100 "drive-by" studies like this one, and about 50 larger works. I have about 70-80 of the small ones done, and 1 of the big ones....yes, I said "one".... I hope you will follow along with my Passing America Blog, and contribute comments there as you want to. Everyone has a farm in their memory....

Charleston Eve

Charleston Eve_state 1___24 x 24 oil on linen with a REALLY COOL frame___shipped to Charleston for SEWE
The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) is Feb 11-14 in Charleston, SC. This painting is one of my special ones for the show. I am mad at myself for shipping it off (just now!) before taking a picture of it FINISHED, and before taking a picture with the frame. I am so excited about the frame, I can't stand it!....but will have to leave you in suspense about that, unless you can come see me in Charleston!...I shipped 40 new works to the show...230 pounds of art in two big boxes...My prayer is always that I have to ship back EMPTY BOXES ;)...I will post a few more paintings from the show...stay tuned! vvaughan8@yahoo.com

Moonlit Cabin_sketch, mountains, night,

Moonlit Cabin__from my Colorado Sketchbook
I sketched this last week in Colorado. Our neighbors were gone for the winter, so there was no light at their cabin, except moonlight reflecting off their roof.
You can't see your palette at night. It takes LIGHT to see color....color is in the light! And if you take a little light with you outside, it's almost as difficult to see the colors on your palette, because the lights themselves are all incomplete as far as the spectrum goes. ( I go into this in depth at my longer workshops...I even touch on this at the one-day workshops)...SO...to work outside at night I usually start with a value study...and a lot of memory. This takes practice, but it's a worthwhile exercise... Here is the rest of my workshop schedule for 2009...

Moonlight Wash_11 x 14_ Colorado, mountain, moonlight, fall

"Moonlight Wash"___11 x 14 oil on linen...available at Act I Gallery, Taos, NM
After painting yesterday's moonlight scene, I went inside (it was COLD in the mountains!) and observed this scene out the window... By now, the moon was high, and full and there was a LOT Of light washing over the mountain. I could even see the cloud shadows moving across....I took mental notes (and a few scribbled ones on paper) and painted this the next day.
It's hard to photograph dark oil paintings...there tends to be a sheen on the surface where the sky ought to be dark....sorry about that! I will be teaching a NIGHT SKY workshop...and other topics, in beautiful Fredericksburg, TX, early next year...Feb 5 -7, 2010....it's a great time of year to get out of the "cold" if you live up north! Our February weather can be cold, too, but sometimes the flowers are already blooming....
Let me know if you want info! vvaughan8@yahoo.com

Mountain Lights_11 x 14_moonlight, mountain, Colorado

"Mountain Lights"__11 x 14 oil on linen panel___available at Act I Gallery, Taos, NM
We had a full moon while we were in Colorado a few days ago....the moon was up when I painted this, but it was behind the clouds. There was plenty of light to paint by on our porch, so I stayed there a while and studied the clouds and the movement of shadows onthe mountain. I titled this not just for the moonlight, but also for our neighbor's porch lights (at lower left) and the beautiful pinpoints of starlight, too.
I did three moonlight painting, so I will post them for the next few days. I would LOVE to know which one you like best!
I am teaching my techniques for painting at night...please check my workshop schedule if you want to come try it!
