This was my morning demo at the workshop in Gadsden, AL. I had painted a quick study the night before, on a small canvas (see post of July 18), and decided that this view presented some great things to go with my lesson....The demo went smoothly, then the group got started on their own paintings. It was a perfect day for painters who were new to outdoor painting and didn't have all the gear. There was not a breath of wind, which was good, because some of pur easels weren't very sturdy. My easel is sturdy and light, but I got careless and left the canvas loose, just leaning like everyone else's. I never felt the puff of breeze, but it got the best of me and provided a great teaching moment, when it toppled my canvas into my palette...see the nice blobs of paint in "state 1"? The lessons were:

1. Never unhitch your canvas

2. Clouds aren't white

3. Practice what you preach!

Gadsden a great place to paint! Beautiful atmosphere. Mountains. Blooming trees. Rivers, waterfalls and and waterfowl. And FARMS!! 15 painters joined me in a one day workshop and they were so enthusiastic that no one noticed that it got up to 97 degrees! Well, except that one guy. I will just call him "Red Kevin"...heehee...

Elaine's Day in Gadsden

No that's not Elaine in the boat. She was having even more fun on the bank above, painting with me in the gadsden, AL workshop I taught on Saturday! There we packed in a full day of painting on the hillside next to the courthouse, overlooking the Coosa River. I painted this little one early, hurying up to get the fishing boat in before they moved on, but they stayed in this place for about 30 minutes! The fish must have been biting!

Three Red Lights

While I painted on the Coosa River, yesterday, I turned to start putting things away and this caught my eye...wow...I HAD to paint it! It was too dark to photograph it then, so I did it today!

We had a great workshop (14 attended ), and we painted all day...then LATER we found out it was 97 degrees today! No one complained till we got the weather report! I painted another one of the Coosa, like yesterday's post, but it blew over into my palette, so I have a little repair work to do. Nothing like a little unpredictable color!

Painted about an hour ago....I think I liked the one I painted after this better, but it was too dark to photograph it. Gadsden Alabama is a beautiful city, with the Coosa river running through it!

Tomorrow is my workshop with 15 -20 nice new friends here, followed by the reception for the opening of "last Year on the Farm". This is my collection of 365 plein air paintings which I competed late last year. I hoep you can come see this last exhibit where all the paintings will hang together...through August 31!

Those Blue Alabama Hills

We have "atmosphere" in Texas, but not this much! It does not feel humid, but there must be lots of moisture in the air to make the hills this blue...gorgeous! I did not do justice in this, my FIRST Alabama painting....tomorrow I will go out with my hosts and scout some locations for Saturday's workshop. Saturday, I will conduct a workshop for a CROWD! and do a demo or two , (Chicken Clinic?? of course!) and then we will have a gallery talk and a nice reception at the Gadsden Museum of Art. I look forward to meeting all the nice people who have put together a wonderful exhibit.

**The painting today was painted in Colorado, on the Conejos River, while every cottonwood tree dropped it's cotton...it looked like snow that day (I left it all out of the painting, except the stuff that stuck to it.) But that's not all. A half hour into this, there was a HUGE hatch of little moths like I have never seen! I rescued 73 otf them before loosing count....
In a few hours I leave for Gadsden Alabama. My 365 paintings of "Last Year on the Farm" are there, now. The folks in Gadsden are buying them right and left, and I will bring home what's left, and start delivering the "Sold" ones! If you bought one, or want to CONFIRM your dibs, NOW is the time to do it. I have a lot of people wanting them and I will be selling them off unless you have a deposit...OK??

I teach a lesson in my workshops, which I call a "Chicken Clinic". The step-by-step process helps "chicken" painters be brave.
This is the biggest one I have done as a demo, (so far), and the title, "Se Acordo Pedro" means "Peter remembered"...I like this title, because my maiden name was "Pedro". Since it was a demo, the price is low for one this size!
After the demo, I made some subtle changes, including the slight silhouette of a background form...could it be Peter?

Oh, I am sorry, I promised to show the completed Chicken Clinic from the weekend workshop. We had a birthday celebration and 2 baseball games and I lost my daylight before I could photograph it...So I will post this one for a few hours and replace it with the completed FAT CHICKEN from yesterday!.....note the special price on this drive-by painting . I did this one as we approached Santa Fe late in the afternoon a few weeks ago....it has a juicy sky!

Chicken Fat

You can see the easel holding this one down before it gets away! In yesterday's workshop, I demonstrated this one as the class painted along...it was my biggest "Chicken Clinic" demo, but Carrie painted along with a HUGE 24 x 18...wow! ...and all the chickens came out great! I will show the completed one tomorrow, and explain why it looks like this now ;)

I painted this at the last workshop I taught in Palo Duro, looking up at the canyon wall from the first water crossing there.

Today, (Saturday) I am teaching a FULL GROUP of 15 in Austin, for a day long mini workshop, starting with a Chicken Clinic....I am really looking forward to this group, because many have already contacted me with great comments and questions...Teaching is something that I enjoy a lot, because I LOVE LEARNING and passing along what I have learned. This summer I am studying Physics, Spanish and sign language...Tomorrow I might post the NEW CHICKEN from this workshop, just to compare it to yesterday's!

Well, this one is not on par with yesterday's "Jake", but here is the "fruit" of my last "Chicken Clinic". I teach workshops and somethimes we begin with a "Chicken Clinic", a step-by-step lesson where we get our brushes loosened up and take the white off the canvas...it's fun and helps you understand how oils work, guaranteed to make you BRAVE (not "chicken", get it?) and in the end you get a nice chicken (OK, a rooster) to take home...Next clinic: Saturday with a great group of artists in Austin!....get ready, y'all!

A few weeks ago I posted the "block-in" of "Jake"...here is the finish! I hope you like it, Till...what a great time I had painting Mr. Jake! This painting is much biger than my usual commission, so I enjoyed getting to "sprawl" across the canvas :)

Tomorrow is another road trip for me, as I get to deliver Jake to the Dallas area. I plan to go see the Impressionists exhibit from the Chicago Museum at the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth and see my neice, Chanelle, again...looking forward to a geat day!

Down From Espanola

This was a great New Mexican sky outside of Espanola, NM last week. I paianted as my husband drove and then we drove right into this rain storm!
We had the big billows like this in central Texas today, as I hauled a car-load of high schoolers to the nearby water park called "Schlitterbahn". After a couple hours the skies let loose and we ended up getting WETTER at the water park! ha! Happy birthday to my youngest son, Samuel!

Just as we wrapped up our workshop a few weeks ago, this thunderhead built up, being illuminated by the sun late in the day.
Rockport , TX is wonderfully HOT this time of year. The July 4 Rockport Art Festival is one of Texas' great events. Next Rockport Workshop will be in September.

Storm Coming

I finished this one a couple of hours ago....just before dinner. The afternoon thunderstorms have been with us all week, here in the Rockies. Today's storms were BIG, with hail and lightning. Nothing like a little ligthning to help you finish a 16 x 20 QUICK!

Tomorrow is our last day here, so I plan to stay out all day and paint. Happy Independance Day!

Conejos Clique

It has rained every afternoon....like the usual monsoon season in the southern Rockies, but it seems to be here earlier this year. This lively band of horses paused for a few minutes while I did this little sketch yesterday morning.

Palo Duro Mid Day

Ah the red rock canyons of the west! Beautiful, but sometimes hard to paint! I think it's easier when the light is low and there are high contrasting shadows and a REAL DIFFERENCE in value and color....that's why I painted this at the MOST DIFFICULT (for me) time of day...Mid Day light is cool, flat and distinctive...and the distance is hard to convey. I think this one came out well, or I wouldn't be showing it! hahaha What do you think, Rick???

Tomorrow I will post one that I have painted while here in Colorado....if anything comes out OK! I am painting all day today and tomorrow...

Buffalo Single

On June 26 I posted a pair of buffalo....this single one was painted from the same group, but I liked how he seemed in command of his little patch of grass. Buffalo are very different, anatomically, from my usual cattle, and I struggled with that a little bit.

Rockport Oak

Rockport, TX is well known for these great wind-bent oak trees that grow in clumps all over the place. They are a "signature" of this part of the Texas Coast. We "took on" the oak trees at my last workshop day...here is my effort!
***I am in the cool mountains of Southern Colorado as I post this, today...My Fater-in-law's poppy garden is "popping out, so I think I will go "take them on" with paint today! Please watch for new Colorado paintings next week!

A few weeks ago I painted this as a demo for a little workshop I taught through the Amarillo Art School. Palo Duro is Texas' version of the Grand Canyon...we'll call it a "GOOD Canyon"!

A great place t o visit and paint. If you go, make sure to stay for the Texas musical drama...it's great!

Buffalo Pair

On the way back from Rockport a few days ago thiis pair was under some trees grazing as if everything in the world was fine. They didn't know that I drove up on them just after escaping what I am sure was a tornado. I drove into an aweful storm, snapping pictures along the way until on top of a long hill I was hit with huge winds blowing tree parts straight at me...and hail...I looked around for a hiding place but there were no low spots so I just pulled over on top of the hill while the wind did a complete 180 and hit me with the tree parts from behind...

When a huge hay truck drove by , I jumped into the lane after it (feeling safe?) and we drove over the hill where these buffalo were, and a couple of highway partolmen who were there to prevent others from going up the hill....I stayed with these buffalo till some of their calm rubbed off on me :)

Bells for Chanelle

A few weeks ago painted this with and for my niece, Chanelle. After she watched this one, I led her and Shawn in a Chicken Clinic, one of my fun art lessons. Their chickens came out better than mine!

This little church is on my way to Rockport, in the little town of Cuero, I think....maybe Gonzales??? I will paint it again...it's a beautiful place!

***Today we drove to the mountains of Southern Colorado...will visit with family and spend some time here "en plein air"...I did a couple of "drive-by's" from the car. Maybe I will post them this week!

This was a nice relaxing painting, despite the fact that I locked my keys in the truck as I got out to paint. Somehow, I knew I had no place else to go, so I relaxed and enjoyed the process, while waiting for Scotty's lock and key to come to my rescue! It was a beautiful day in Rockport, TX.

I finished this "Last Day" on April 21, and if you have been following, I already posted this one, commenting about the fire that caused the burn in the background...the black is all gone, now, the new grass is in, and life goes on at the farm.
Many have asked what is happening at the land NOW, with us gone...Well, the developers who bought the farm from our family have put their big project on hold. They have leased the property to another farmer who is grazing these cows there, and keeping the hay cut and baled. No telling when development will come, but it is inevitable. That will be an awful day for me, but it's in the future, and maybe I will have another piece of land to get attached to by then!

This was the beginning of the warm sun as the morning clouds lifted. I loved our FULL VIEWS of the skies on the farm...you could tell what the weather would do, ahead of time. Here a little rain shower skips by to the west. The clouds broke up and the day was HOT!

Next week I will turn the corner on new adventures....ROCKPORT, Texas will be the first new scenes...I have some new paintings from there....then the mountains of colorado....and some still lifes (lives?) in between! Stay tuned!

19I enjoyed the solitude that morning...too overcast for sunrise color, so I "zoomed in" on some distant trees...workshop note: if the light is bad and the contrasts are weak, zoom in on something that has interesting shape or forms...these are a couple of the trees I often painted in the distance below the pens, but I peinted them from a different angle, at all times of the day and all seasons.

This one, the one before it and the one to come after it, were all started within 15 minutes of each other. I painted them FAST and furiously, because I could tell the sky was closing up for good over the moon for the night.

The sky was so thick with humidity that night. I was sure the moon would be gone at any moment, so I painted fast! The sky changed so fast that at one point I had 3-4 paintings going at once! These I will keep if no one wants them!

After painting all day, FINALLY some "color" and contrast came, just before sunset. There were a couple ducks flying by before settling on the tank for the night... Soon, the moon would be up...The next SIX PAINTINGS will feature the AMAZING MOON we had that night...my Last Day on the Farm.

As I neared the halfway point of painting 24 paintings in 24 hours for my Last Day on the Farm, I saw the cows hurry back into the near pasture, and graze all they could before it began to get dark. They went back and forth from pasture to pasture all day! (Just two more days till the moonlight paintings).

The sun started breaking through at the end of the day and some visitors came by! First some old friends, then the last of the Sand hill cranes heading north.

This is the deck where I painted from for all those years, particularly the Last Year on the Farm. I loved our old farm house, made of logs (except this North wall), and I had a great studio upstairs, which I really miss.

(revising it saved me from having to pay twice)...it's a bad thing for anyone watching the auctions, because the #8 auction will only last about three days....BUT it's good for me, because the #8 painting is my favorite, and maybe no one will buy it, and I can KEEP IT!...I will post it tomorrow, but here is the preview link and the auction is ON!

This one black cow was easy to spot among the 50 white ones that roam the pastures at the old farm. She was the most noticeable of the bunch! After watching the farm "die" last year, it was so nice to paint one last day among all the LIFE again!

Twenty-four paintings in 24 hours! One Last Day on the Farm..
Here is the fifth one I painted, just a couple weeks ago...

On the overcast day that I painted 24 in 24, the cows moved from pasture to pasture...T H R O U G H this fence. I see them do it all the time, and wonder how they keep from getting cut up....I think it's the "leather outfit" :)That's the explanation for this sub-title...they don't seem to be bothered by barb wire.

I told about this painting when I previewed it in April...click here to see the earlier blog post (4 of 24) and another picture of how I started the painting. If you click on the painting above, you can see a large, detailed version.

Right now and for the next couple of weeks, I am letting these "Last Day..." paintings go...one by one...in an auction...I expect there to be some "good deals", and I will be shipping the art to the winners as soon as the auction is over! Whereas, the 365 paintings of our "Last YEAR on the Farm" will be shipped in January, I want these little ones to go to their homes immediately....These are my dandelion seeds, being blown to the wind...little pieces of my farm scattered to new places...

From May until November last year, we had record rains, and yet there were no farmers to cut or bale the hay, because our farming had come to an end. The other families had left the farm, but my family stayed on as we searched for a new home someplace. I painted every day, and saw the farm "going away slowly"...the cows left in January...the egrets disappeared from the landscape, the hay grew and grew, and weeds began to choke the place. The hand of the farmer was gone, and the countenance of the place really suffered. By August, you could hear the constant drone of bugs in the brush, well watered and sheltered by the tall grasses. At least they symbolized "life"...and then, one day, some new cows appeared! Another farmer had leased the place for his herd! With the cows came the cutting of new hay...these are the bales that bring life back to this old empty farm!
